Hi everyone! I am looking for some loads for 120grn bullets to run through my 7 mag. I have several reloading manuals and as you all know I'm sure, the data varies widely. It's not a problem as I have a fair amount of experience reloading and know how to look for pressure signs and how to work up to a max load.

What I've found is that RL22 is supposed to give the best velocity in the 3500fps range, but I have heard it is temperature sensative and it is pretty hard to find right now. What other powders would you suggest? I'm thinking H4831SC might be decent or Winchester Supreme 780?

I know for the heavier bullets that IMR7828, H1000 and Retumbo would all be good. Thing is that I don't need a 150grn e-tip or TTSX to take out a deer(Yes I'm stuck in Kalifornia)! I've run the numbers and if I can get to 3500fps with a 120 TTSX, it is flatter with the same wind drift out to 400yds than a 150 at 3100fps or a 140 at 3200. 400 yds is as far as I need to be shooting at a deer, most I've killed in the past have been more like 100yds!

Had pretty good results with that ttsx and H-100V this fall. Got up to 3450 before the accuracy started to fall off. RL22 didn't get me anywhere near that velocity, but it didn't get there with the 140 grain bullets either.

Thanks, I looked at H100V but it isn't an "extreme" powder I don't believe so the velocity may vary with the temperature quite a bit. I haven't seen anything about supreme 780 and temperature though either, so that may not be a good route to go although it seems to give good velocity with mild pressures from the Hodgden reloading center. Anybody else?

Nobody else? I'd like to order up some powder soon, but I guess I have to wait for some &*^#$^% primers to get in stock before it matters anyways:(

I used to shoot 120's out of a big 7 a lot (wore out one barrel with the load). Pretty always ran R22, and would do so again in a heart beat.

We run 71-72g of R#22 with a CCI250(very important) in a Rem Case. Accuracy is less than 1/2" in our Rem 700's.

The old Nosler 120g Solid Base lead tip was a wonderful deer bullet with this load.

You may have a slow lot#of R#22

Used to run 120 gr. bullets at near 3500 fps 72.1 (MAX) Gr. of H4831 Hornady vol II.

That older Hornady Vol 2 was a great book. It was developed when Joyce Hornady was alive and all loads were developed in production rifles. I have found over the years that the loads I have referenced (after the event, as I develop my own loads) were overall very close to what I achieved.

I got tired of waiting for Federal 215GMM primers and I ordered up some Rem 9 1/2 mag primers I found. I also have some H4831SC, H4350 and H1000 on the way as well! I would have liked to have gotten some 7828SSC and Retumbo, but they are not in stock anywhere I have found. The three powders I got should keep me busy for a while though;) I'm also thinking about working up a 150 grain load with e-tips or TTSXs along with the 120 grain load I was originally planning.

i hope you don't like deer meat because the few i shot with 120gn bullets in my 7mag were about ruined. those bullet tore whole shoulders off deer. i went to 140gn and stopped destroying meat somewhat. i really don't like the 7mag for whitetails anymore.

Where you shooting all copper 120 grain bullets? I was going to get some 120 grain ballistic tips also, but just for varmints. I can see those being real messy on a deer at 3500fps! Of course it would probably drop 'em on the spot if you put one behind the shoulder.

My friend shot a deer at about 100yds with my .223/50grn ballistic tip and it went down fast. I was right next to him, he didn't have a rifle and I told him to put it in the ribs right behind the shoulder. I wouldn't recomend it, but it worked. Small hole in, explosion to the vitals, no exit....meat on the table:)

I'll suggest you try to stay in the 3300fps area with the 120gr nosler ballistic tip. I used to shoot this bullet at 3500fps, It will burn the throat fast. The load i used was the 72gr H4831 max load out of the old book. I worked it down to 68gr of H4831 and my note show Cracked necks loose primers at 72gr with some makes of brass. They sure where accurate in that barrel, until they where not. The bull elk i shot at about 90yds did a back flip and was dead before it hit the ground. Nearly cut a big muledeer in half with a spine shot. Looked like i hit it with a bomb. If your shooting anything under 200yds, there are better bullet choices

Yeah, since I haven't found much info or experiences from people that were actually able to get 3500fps+ with a 120, I am really thinking about just sticking with 150's. Hopefully at 3100fps-3200fps....

I still have a partial 50round box of the 3500fps load in the ammo safe. I pulled a bunch of bullets, with the hammer.

Yes it was a great manual. I've used the 139 Gr Hornady load in that book for 35 years worth of bang flops.
