That's good to know Scott. I just got some 180 grain Accubonds so I'll have to give it another try.

PRM showed me the link below. It looks like Litz came up with better BCs than Nosler on the 338 Federal appropriate bullets.

The 180 Accubond is .409 an the 200 Accubond is .461. These are higher than Nosler publishes. Some of the other Nosler bullets in 30 caliber measured less than Nosler claims.

I'm not sure it will make much of a difference at normal ranges but it certainly gives more ammunition that the 338 Federal is not a short range woods rifle.

I have no way of knowing who is right, the manufacturers or Litz, but he has a good reputation. As youstated, some bullets he indicates better than advertised BCs (180 an 200 Nosler AB) and others a little worse (185 Barnes TTSX and 225 Nosler AB). That is for the handful of .338 bullets I've looked at. Both the 180 and 200 AB really are notably better.

The 200 AB shoots well in my Kimber and thus may be the bullet of choice for next season. I'm loading some up with 8208 to take out in the cold and see how the velocity holds up.

I had an opportunity to try some loads in cooler temps and compare to warm temps. I load up four of each load and fired two at an indoor range (69 deg) and two outside (19 deg). The rounds sat out all night in temps down to 8 deg. A Magnetospeed chrono was used for all.

Not exactly a statistical sample, but it's a start.

I created a separate thread, but saving here as a reference also.

Interesting. I tried 49.5 TAC with 180 NBTs which was good for 2730 fps. I'm giving up chasing velocity. I'm backing down to 49 which gives me 2700 fps. I'm staying with 52 grains of MR2000 for 200 Ballistic Tips/Accubonds. Those loads shoot well and with Litz's BC testing should stay above 1800 fps out to 450 yards.

I'm going to customize the my CDS dial to the 180s at 2700 fps. Even with the 200s it will be within 2 inches at 400 yards.

Playing with this one today I finally got the Barnes 160 ttsx to shoot.

Settled on 42.5 grains H4198 COAL 2.749". Two three shot groups were 3/4" and 1/2".

I am liking your numbers on the 160gr TTSX with the AA2230 as I have some loaded with 51grs to try in my DPMS LR10 with 18 inch barrel. That's my starting load so when the weather clears I will go to the range. Have you tried the Barnes 53gr load I don't know how you would get the bullet seated as the case is full at 53gr.

If I recall, I stopped at 52. Found great velocity and superb accuracy there. I listed 3050, but that's the low end. Typically 3050-3070 on warm days. 8208 is also pretty good. I get 2900 with very good accuracy.

PRM are you still running the BR2 with 8208? I tried Fed 210M with the 160 and 185 TSX accuracy has been good but not super repetitive.

What primers have youall had the best success with?

Thanks All

I have tended to have better luck with BR2s vice Fed 210s. 210s aren't bad, just a bit larger groups when I've compared side-by-side. Also a bit slower than BR2s. I have had good luck with F215s on a few occasions though. I had two no-fires with BR2s (one with TAC, one with 8208) when I tested them in the cold. Still looking into that. Although it appears the firing pin was fine. I'm going to try 215s with 8208 when I work up a load for 200 E-Tips.

Thanks for all the info I have reviewed all of it with interest. I was looking at my old targets and note the 210 seems a little better group wise than the 210m. I am going to try the BR2 and post results. I may also try the Rem 9.5 with 8208.

Also been looking at Desert Safaris that free range Axis hunt looks like a great take.

Shoot straight

Anyone try 225 Accubonds with TAC, 8208 or MR 2000? Trying to see if 2450-2500 is doable.

JB listed 2460ish with TAC and a 225 AB in his 338 Fed reloading article.

If you have any, LVR would be the first thing I'd try, next would be 2000MR.

FYI, AA 2230 is available again. Best powder I've found for velocity and accuracy with lighter bullets (3050+ with 160gr, 2830s with 180).

What I am hoping, but not yet certain, is that this is the 'new' AA 2230 which is supposed to be more temp resistant and be made in USA vice Belgium. Have an email in to Accurate asking.

For grins I tried H322 with the 180AB and 160 TTSX.

In summary, speeds were ok, but accuracy was fair with the 180AB, tick over 1", and downright terrible with the 160TTSX. In fairness, this rifle hates 180ABs, so the result was as good as any other combo.

160 TTSX, 48.5gr H322, 2930 FPS, ~1.5" group
48gr: 2921, 2915, 2919
48.5gr: 2932, 2929, 2925
49gr: 2955, 2958, 2958

180AB, 46gr H322, 2770 FPS and 1". 45.5gr was 2750 and 2"+
45gr: 2736, 2759, 2732
45.5gr: 2757, 2737, 2751
46gr: 2775, 2773, 2767

prm,

You going elk hunting again this year? Have you decided what bullet you are trying this time?

I'm going mule deer hunting in West Texas the first week of December. I'm taking the 180 ballistic tip again.

Yes to elk hunting. 1st rifle CO. As for bullets, who knows. Right now I have Cutting Edge 175 MTHs loaded up with AA2230 to try. If that doesn't shoot well I may try (yet again...) to get 180 ABs to fly well. Then 200 ABs, then 210 Partitions, and if all that doesn't make me happy, I know the 160 TTSX will shoot lights out and they work great on stuff big and small. I picked up some new AA2230 which is supposedly more temp insensitive. We'll see. I may try that with 185 TTSXs. Should get close to 2800.

PRM have you used the 160 ttsx on whitetail? I'm looking for a good bullet mainly for whitetail with in 200yds but also useful on elk/ moose, I was thinking 210 partitions but I have 2230 and some 160ttsx so maybe I'll give it a try.

The 160 will be great on a WT. I have not used on one, but I did shoot an Impala which is basically the same. Works fantastic. The 210 would be great too I'm sure, but as well as the 160 shoots for me with 2230, it's my go-to bullet for all critters.

338Fed, Do not overlook the Hornady 200gr SP. It flattens whitetails and is deadly on elk too.
