Can the entire rear boss be removed or is it an integral part of the barrel. I was reading on another site about them and I guess I always assumed it was part of the barrel. It souns like it slides over the barrel?

Thanks

It is Soldered on (or most mauser rear sights are). VERY careful heating and a wood block/hammer can be used to take it off. The barrel will probable have to be refinished.

If you get it too hot it can ruin the barrel as well.

That is great news, the Mauser was given to me by a friend as it has no value since being sporterized. I have shot it a lot but the original sights are only good at about noon......otherwise this thing is lazer accurate for being 115 years old. I want to shoot it more and saw one with a Redfield peep mounted on it.

Now I just have to track down a peep

Thanks

I just mounted a scout rail from S&K with my old sporterized beater as I can not see those sights well, it fits right into the sight base.

The 91's rear sight is soft soldered on. It's been a LOONG time since I reworked mine but I think it also has small screw in the sight base that had to be removed before it could be slide off. And yes, the whole thing had to be reblued afterwards.

I cut my (still excellant) barrel to 22", installed a set of Rem 700 sights, front and rear.

I just left mine on...saves a lot of mess and fuss and dosen`t hurt the looks. I also left on the original front barrel guard. My rifle happenes to have some nicely figured walnut, so I refinished and checkered the piece. Did a peep on the reciever, soldered on a front after cutting the barrel down to 22 inches and recrowning. Killed a few deer with it. Easy carry, and very accurate with Sierra 150s`.
One of the nices bucks I`ve killed was with this rifle in an extended season here in Wi. I just had the good fortune to load some 200 grn RN bullets that day. Shot the deer at about 60-70 yrds feeding away from me. Bullet entered right under the pelvis bone and exited the front chest. Droped right there.

I am still pondering the peep on the reciever, and thought about leaving the rear band on.

What peep sight will work with these?

Thanks

Mine is a Redfield. Don`t know if a model is associated with this reciever, or at least I can`t remember should that be the case.

Check around.
