Hi, all new to the forum today. I recently recieved a Savage Model 19NRA Serial Number 39,7xx. As you can see from the pictures it's in pretty good shape, not great, but the Rear peep sight is missing. Numrich doesn't have it, and I was wondering if anyone could help me out. Also if anyone knows any history on the gun please reply. I've had a hard time finding anything on it

The mag looks to be a replacement on the gun, the original mags had a knob on the bottom. The guns are usually pretty good shooter, I have a few myself.

That sounds about right. I read on another sight that properly leveled, sighted, and in good order it will put up 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

I recieved the gun for free. My fiance's dad gave me that and an old Remington 550-1 Semiauto he found in the attic of his wife's parents house. The semiauto is complete, but I am still missing the rear peep sight, and an original mag from the 19NRA. The mag in the picture I got from www.gun-parts.com. Does anyone have either of these they would be willing to get rid of. (mag, and sight) Also when the gun is re-completed, what can I expect in value. I've heard between $150-$275. As far as I know all the numbers match. Under the buttplate 21721 is stamped into the stock and buttplate. The blueing is ok. The bore is bright with good rifling, and the action is extremely smooth and clean. Thanks all of you this has been the first site I've gotten a reply on

I think your rifle was made between 1923 and 1933. Watch eBay and other auction sites. The sight you need runs about $60. The early sight only had one hole in it to hold the sight on, later version had two. The #10 sight (1933 to about 1936) will work, also. Attachment = #10 on the left, what you need is on the right.

Thanks for the information. I'd really like to get one from you guys. you seem to be alot more trustworthy than some of these auction sights. The rear sight might be at my fiance's uncles house. When her grandparents passed alot of the stuff was moved to his house, but it's a long shot. There are two holes in the stock just below the end of the bolt 1.120" apart center to center. I am told were drilled to mount an early model "Lyman 103" tang sight. which is also gone. he could have even traded the peep for the lyman. Good thing too. $60 is an absolute cieling for me. I work 20 hrs a weekend at a bowling alley at $8/hr, and pay over $3500 a semester for college I just passed $4,000 for the year, and I still have to pay rent and buy food. Talk about a champagne taste and homemade bathtub grape wine income. If I can get any help that would be great. I'm just a 20 yr old trying to start my collection. I can damn well tell you my kids will know how to use/shoot guns responsibly when they grow up


On another note, I do have a Model 12 Winchester 16GA. with a Integral muzzle brake/choke that you twist by hand for the setting you want full modified etc that I got from my great grandfather. 99.999% perfect condition I've been told that would bring almost 2k. I think I'd have to be suicidally in debt to get rid of that one though

I had a 1919 NRA like your rifle that I occassionally shot in a 50 ft basement range league when I lived in NH. The triggers are aweful, which seems to be a Savage trait, but the rifle was wonderfully accurate and I could occassionally beat the guys with Spfd 1922s, Win 52s, Rem 37s and Rem 40xs. It sure did upset them when a guy shooting a Savage and the cheapest RWS or Eley ammo that I could find could beat their nicer rigs.

Thanks for the pictures, and information. Now hopwfully I can find one for sale from you guys or an auction. right now ebay, gunbroker, and auction arms don't have anything at all, and Numrich wants almost $100 for it and they've been out of stock for 4 months now. maybe one of you can help me out

Sorry that I can't help in providing you a sight. The only one I have is on my Model 19 NRA. I'll be attending a gun show next month and will keep an eye open for one. Also, the correct mags are often listed on AA or ebay.

Thank you all I was beginning to lose hope. My uncle who deals mainly with pre civil war - WW I era guns couldn't find anything either. He recommended to have a regular leaf step sight fitted to the existing holes for now so as to make the gun operational, but not alter it in any way from all original, so if and when I DO find the correct sight I can just unscrew the leaf, and put the peep right on. Is this a good Idea. The front sight is so high it seem kind of wierd to me because you'd have to adjust it funny, or am I just not getting the picture. But I do know not drilling any new holes in the gun IS a good idea <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

On another note. On the barrel, about 5 inches up from the rear sight screw hole. there is a screw flush into the barrel. It looks like it came on the gun originally. Does anyone know what that is

PS... the sight at the end of the barrel is the "front sight", sight near the bolt is the "rear sight". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

duh, my bad. It was about 5 seconds after I got up that I wrote that thanks. Also will any strap work or is it possible to find an original leather one, and wouldn't that make the gun worth more. And does anyone have an opinion on the rear leaf sight for now

What I would do to shoot the rifle while I looked for a proper rear sight is replace both the front and rear sights. That front sight is really tall for anything other than target shooting, as you've noticed.

Drift the front sight out with a brass punch and install one that is the right height for the temporary rear sight, and you'll be in business. It is important (VITAL) that that you punch from left to right, as the dovetail gets narrower as you move left, and you will destroy your front sight if you hammer it out the wrong direction.

I guess "left and right" could be misconstrued; when I say right, I mean the side the bolt handle is on.

They didn't ship with a sling, only sling swivels. Slings were sold seperate and are not marked.

Other sights are fine as long as you don't mess up the threads or dovetail. Don't lose our front sight, you will need it when you find the correct rear.

You may check with Garry Fellers down in Texas for the sight. He specializes in old metalic sights.

Thanks all of you. I'll have my uncle do it, he knows what he's doing. he managed to take my dad's Colt 1860 Army revolver, unsieze clean and get it working and it doesn't even look like he touched it. He lives in Monroe Michigan, and I live near Nashville TN so I'll have to make a special trip.

Rather than removing the front sight wouldn't it be possible to set a leaf sight up on a few pieces of stamped steel. or would that mar the rest of the finish.

Can anyone give me an estimate of what the gun would be worth when it is re completed With the original mag and sight. I can take a few more pictures. The stock is almost flawless save for a few small scratches. It does need some linseed oil and a good rub down, but what do you expect it sat in an attic in new york for nigh on 40-50 years. The barrel is mostly blue with tints of gray, but no rust.

I'll probably make my own sling for it seeing as I am an Eagle Scout and I learned to sew leather and bend metal and such. I'm probably going to completely break down the gun this weekend. I'll post later on what I find if anything else interesting pops up

I'm just gratified to hear that there is a 20 year old with an interest in guns. There are fewer and fewer of us every day that hang on to the tradition and right to own arms.

I believe that other hole you are talking about is factory. Mine has one there also. Must be for a target block or something....don't know.

Where close to Nashville? I'm in middle TN myself.
