I recently responded to some posts about the 9422's expressing how much I liked them. Another poster (Gregor) informed me of some discussion of the 9422's being discontinued. He posted a link to another site that talked about it. I read what everyone said on the topic in disbelief. I called Winchester customer service only to find that it is true. looks like plans are for 2005 to be the last year of production qty for the 9422 & the qty is down. After that it will only be small collector runs. If you're a 9422 fan like I am & you have kids/grandkids..... Well, I'll be hitting the stores looking to scoop up what ever I can afford. Dang it, you know how it goes, when they are gone they become legends sought after by those who otherwise would not have been interested. You know guys, I wish my father would have had the insight to try to stick away a few firearms of our past that have since been dropped. A new in the box brass roller savage 99 in 300 sav sure would have been appreciated by me today, as well as a couple of the rimfire colt pistols, woodsman, targetsman, oh man. You guys know what I'm talking about, Remington nylon 66, Winchester 88 lever, maybe its a tube feed JC Higgins rimfire, heck what ever. Everyone has an eye on a firearm that dad or grandpa has that you just can't get anymore.
I can't afford it, I know I cant. But I'll do my best to locate what I can & slap a few nickels down to hold em in my name. I'll pick away till they are paid for & I'll stick em away for my kids. I guess personally I just love that 9422M in the traditional styling. That's what I'm looking for, wish me luck.
Winchester, you just broke my heart.

Dave,

I appreciate your effort in verifing this. It is a shame that this is coming to pass. You are going to have to get a 9422 now, because a few years down the road they'll have collector's prices.

Maybe you can sell a grilled cheese sandwich with a religious likeness on E-bay for $28,000?

Regards,
Gregor

That sounds like a good idea. I've got some old underwear that might have that sort of likeness, I'd be willing to let a pair go for about $12,000. That's a pretty good deal when you consider they are somewhat less of a perishable item than the grilled cheese sandwich. I looked around in town here last night (small town with a few hardware stores that sell guns) I found 2 9422's, one slightly used in mint condition straight stock laminate for just over 300 & a new in box yellowboy 9422 for 475. That's not bad for a yellowboy & I know he's been sitting on it for a while so he would probably deal, doubt if he knows about the plan to discontinue.

Update on my efforts to lay claim to one of the last of these fine little rifles. I just located a new in the box 9422M Yellowboy locally for $345. Now tell me that aint a deal! Holy jumpin catfish I hit the jackpot with that one! The standard traditional 9422M goes on average for $425 just about anywhere you look, this is a magnum yellowboy sitting in a dust covered box on a shelf in the back of a hardware store for $345.
Like Bill Murray would say "it's a Cinderella story..."

I first heard about the discontinuation while chatting with a friend from IA. Natually that got me thinking about them, the juices flowing, an itch started, and within a week, I just had to have one. Looking through the catalog the Legacy model just spoke to me. Unfortunately, there was one in stock at a local distributor. No Cinderella story here, $460. Of course it's in .17 HMR so that ratcheted up the cost a bit. Dang it's nice. When it gets up to 15 I'll head to the range and warm it up. Please don't mention any other classic designs being discontinued, my marriage may depend on it.

Well, I shouldn't mention this then...... Have you seen the 2005 Winchester catalog yet? The litle rimfire levers are making a grand exit, special markings on the recievers, the winny cowboy on one side & a banner on the other side reading 1971? to 2005 (unsure on the start date, it was 71 or 72 I think. Anyways, they sure look nice. Available in several grades in the traditional & legacy. It's bet that you don't look at them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The juices were flowing and the 9417 was in stock. Yeah, I saw the pictures of the new ones, okay but didn't turn my crank. Of course, there's always room for one more in the safe.

I'll maybe go & pick up my "Cinderella story" 9422M Yellowboy this weekend. I made a quick sale on a little ruger MKII .22 pistol so I could slap some money down on the little Yellowboy. Now some things have come together for me money wise so I think I can go in & pay off the little yellowboy & also replace the little ruger pistol I sold in order to hold the yellowboy in my name. I sold a standard MKII Ruger blued pistol in fair condition for $200. Now I've found a new MKII stainless 5 1/2" bull barrel target .22 for $285 at the same store that has the yellowboy. I think I'll try to pick both up this weekend. Cinderella story indeed, I intended to upgrade my standard model MKII for a longer heavier barrel some day anyways, never thought I'd find a new stainless unit in my price range to fit the bill. Happy ending, big smiles, tears of joy..... ok, no tears but I'm pretty happy still the same. My oldest boy is 7 years old soon to be 8. Now I just have to stuff that new yellowboy to the back of the safe for a few years & it will be his on a birthday when I feel he is ready to fully appreciate it & able to safely handle a lever/hammer gun. (he's got a Marlin stainless "buckaroo" single shot bolt action .22 in the safe right now and has been learning responsible handling & use with it since he was 5.)
I've got a daughter too, age 11 who does well with the shooting/safe handling as well. They share that little single shot buckaroo. Her interest in hunting is questionable, her interest in spending time with dad is certainly not questionable. So I have to figure out what to do for her, I'm thinking a nice single shot .410 for grouse hunting with dad. I don't see her going out hunting on her own but I know she would like to tag along with me if I go. (I've got a beautiful Winchester 370 model single shot .410 from the late 60's early 70's erra that you would think is brand new, it might be just what she needs for hunting with dad.)
The boy shows more passion for hunting/shooting & a specific admiration for my own 9422M traditional, he has stated that when he grows up he's going to get one like mine. Well he's going to get one alright, a brand new one like dad's only his will be the yellowboy version. He has no idea & I have no plans to tell him until I think he's ready. Then there is the baby boy, 1 year old, who knows what his interests will be. So far he seems to be a mirror image of his older brother so I suspect I should be thinking of him too as a future hunter.

Just purchased a 9422 with case colored receiver and a 20" barrel for my wife. She thinks the case coloring is prettier than the blued or yellow ones. $400. Compliments her .32 spec and 38-55.

I've heard of the case colored 94's, never knew they made a case colored 9422. That's pretty cool. The yellowboy is home now in the safe.
got any pics of that case colored 9422? Hell of a price for what seems to be kind of rare?

Just looked at a 94-22 in the 'classic" configuration. (pistol grip) looks like a Win. 64.
I'm ordering a 35 Whelen tomarrow, but gotta have this 94-22 if it's still in the shop!
Been wanting one for years, looks like this will be my last chance to pick one up. Hope it's still there!
Have owned 2, 94-22 mags., 2, 94-22lr's and a 94-22 lr Trapper. Last one, I gave to my little girl, because she lost hers in a home break-in. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

The 94-22 follered me home today!
It's actually called the Legacy instead of classic.
This is my favorite 94-22 of 'em all! Can't wait 'till this week-end, so I can shoot it!
One happy old goat.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

yep, they call the pistol grip stock the legacy now. The straight stock is the one that floats my boat which I believe they call the traditional. So did you get the new one with the winchester cowboy etched on the side of the reciever? I got a 22 mag in the yellowboy version straignt stock, it'll sit in the safe unfired with the tag hanging on it until my oldest boy is of age, then I will give it to him. When I say "of age" I mean of age to fully appreciate it for what it is, heck I could give it to him now at the age of 7, almost 8 & it would just be kept in the safe along with his single shot bolt action 22 that he learned to shoot with, but I want to wait until it brings more meaning to him, I'll know when he's ready, it might be when he's 10, maybe 11, maybe 25? I'll know when it's time though & then we'll see one happy kid for sure.

No, mine doesn't have anything engraved on the action.
Did notice that the bottom of the action is rounded more that other 94-22's I've owned. Feels lots better in my hand for "packing"
Also notice that this rifle is marked for 22L, and 22Lr, and not 22 short. Seems I've read something on this, can't remember...Also the loading port is the same size as the 22 mag. port. Guss Winchester is reduceing parts inventory.
All and all, this is one neet little 22 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Sure is heart warming to hear you're saving that rifle for your son. He's gonna think his dad is pretty special!
I gave a 94-22 to my little girl when her mom and I split.
I wanted her to know that "dad" would always take her shooting. She's 30 now, and still loves shooting!
She lost it to a home break-in, so I gave her my 94-22 "trapper"

that's cool, the thing with your daughter, really stinks that she had to experience a home break in, that really stinks. Real nice that you could replace her rifle though, I have 3 kids, 2 boys & a girl, girl is the oldest at 11, oldest boy is 7 1/2, and the baby boy is one year old today. The special little 9422 is for the middle boy, the daughter I think would do well with a little .410 shot gun cause I see her maybe grouse hunting with dad although she is awfully sweet on an old Nylon 66 remington I've got in the safe, who knows, maybe I'll have to part with that old remington. & the baby, we'll just have to see what interests that little guy, judging by his young manurisms at the age of 1 today, I'd say I'll probably end up buying a .460 weatherby mag for that boy, he's a bit of a bruiser.....
