Ever since the aquisition of a 450 gr LFN mold, I've been contemplating a big 50. I suppose having the opportunity to shoot a few has also had some effect. Just wondering if anyone else out there is shooting one of these monsters.

HECK NO.
My .454 is plenty, thanks. I have to load it down to shoot deer, ect. around here!
I bought it for my move out West, though, where dogpacks, cougars and bears are a bit more common.
I have heard about this hand-howitzer, though, and if you are a collector, and a bit of a masochist, I say Go For It! Otherwise, if practicality is an issue, get one only if your neighborhood is overrun with herds of angry Rhinos.
Regards,
Jonesey
As long as one doesn't get carried away, the 475 and 500 aren't really that bad to shoot. I was shooting some mild loads out of a buddies 475 today, 400's at 1200 fps, really not that bad. I don't think I'd want to launch them at 1500 though!
The reason I'd like to get a 500 is for hunting moose, I really don't think the 454 is really that much more gun then a 44 mag, I'm pushing 330's 1200 fps, don't really see a slightly bigger bullet, slightly heavier giving me much advantage. I do see a .512" 450 gr bullet at the same speed as more gun though.

458 Lott, -- there is a handgun expert right in your area, and he shoots very large handguns. Go to Shooters Handgun board and ask for 50 AE. He shoots most weeks at the range in Anchorage. -- no
------------------
A hint to the wise is sufficient! Smiles are contagious, infect everyone!

Sonnie,
You're talking about Monte, yup, I know him, quite a character. I've shot his little 500, that he refers to as Thors Hammer, launching 440 gr bullets 1100 fps from a 4" revolver is quite an experience!
My oft times shooting buddy is one of the other big bore sixgun experts up here, he's playing with both a 475 linebaugh, and just picked up a 480 ruger, hopefully I'll get a chance to put a few through it this week.

Paul, I have been shooting a 480 Ruger for 2 weeks now. You really have to get one of them, just a tad more recoil than a hot loaded 44 mag with 300 grain bullets.
------------------
Allen

Allen,
I shot my buddies last week, I know what you mean! The load I was shooting was mild, 380 gr LBT LFN over ~17 gr 296, but the 25 yd group was ~1"! Drop me an e-mail with your address, and I'll send some out to you to play with.
So, how is the 500 AHR shooting? I'm hoping to have my 500 Jeffrey this fall, and also have a 450 howell in the works, can't wait to have something that thumps again.
