I know this isn't news to lots of you, but I've just realized that there is one powder that works pretty well with just about every rifle I have, and that is Varget.
It may not always be the fastest or the most accurate for a particular rifle or bullet, but it always seems to be right up there pretty well in velocity and is consistently accurate enough. I can't really think of any Varget load that I ever put together that was just really bad as far as accuracy goes and I can't really say that for anything else.
I think I'm going to stock up on it because if I had to, it would be the one powder that could do everything in all of my rifles.

My .308 likes it! H4350 seems to be another that works well in most everything I have had too!

I could probably get by with those two, with the exception of my .45-70, which likes H4198.

I burn a lot of mid speed powder. Having a good stock of RL15 I wanted to pick up something else at the last gun show. I couldn't make up my mind between H4895 and Varget so I wound up with an 8 pound jug of each.

Varget works is some cartridges, not so well in others for me, but RL15 works in most everything that I've tried it it.

For me it's RL22.....for the 06 7mag and will try it with the .338 just for kicks. I'm betting it works well.

I've never tried Varget but have had great results using H-4895 and H-4350 in a number of cartridges.

Carolina, you will probably find that Re 22 is too slow for the 338WM. Accuracy will be ok, but the velocities will be dismal.
I found Re 19 to be much more appropriate with H or IMR 4350 a close second.

I can get away with Varget and IMR4350 for all my reloading:
22-250 30-30 270 WSM 300 WSM 338 WM 30-06 308
Dang it I know I'm missing a few.

Coss,
As you infer, it's hard to go wrong using Varget as your medium-range powder; however, if I were to limit myself to only one powder in this range, it would be H4895 because, in my experience, it has no peer for producing excellent results in loads that are considerably below maximum and does about as well as any other medium range powder when used for full loads.
It was all I used when the kids were learning to shoot big-game rifles, and I wanted to employ accurate, recoil-friendly loads.

I get my best accuracy on paper out of a Mini 14 1in9" using 63gr SP with Varget.

When Varget first came out, it was 'posed to be the end all, do all. I tried it in several different rifles and, as you posted, I've always been able to find another powder that did a better job. However, it would come close to being a "generic" powder.
Aim for the exit hole.

Varget works extremely well from my 300 WSM Ruger Frontier shorty carbine. Combine the Varget with the 168 gr VLD and you gotta great hunting and on the range combo.

For about anything I shoot, If I had to be parred down to one powder, then it would be 4064, which has a similar burn rate.. or IMR 4895...
if allowed two powders, then the second choice would be SR 4759 or IMR 4198...

M Bell evidently you have not experienced SR 4759, or IMR 4198.. I have never gotten consistent accuracy in H 4895 down loads..in over 20 calibers I have experimented it in..

Yep, Varget and H4350 can do alot!! Do any of you use the 4350's in your .308's? I was told it burns too slow for a .308.
