Nice piece of wood showing on the 760. Thanks, just as it came from the factory in 1979. Added swivel studs, Redfield base and low rings fitted to a Leupy VariX III 1.5X5 in 1980 and just been hunting it ever since.

I am loving this thread, thanks for all the input, keep it coming (especially the pictures). High Brass and Wink man got some real nice wood in their rifles, and I am one of those folks who likes the 60's & 70's "pressed" checkering patterns - I am going to start looking for something similar.

Odessa, Dad (Dave in WV) refinished the stock on mine when had it. He took that real shiny finish off and I believe stained/sealed the wood. It's now more of a satin finish than a high gloss. He also took the white line spacers out of it. I really like the way it looks and it's been in rain, snow, heat, humidity, etc. without a hiccup.

Man you guys are killing me with these 76/7600 threads. I had supressed my want for one but now its back again. It doesn't help I found a NIB '06 synthetc stocked carbine I can put on layaway.
Any +s or -s concerning carbine length or the synthetic stocks?

The carbine length is perfect, the synthetic stock suck. If you can find a good wood take off I'd go that route, or find a wood stocked carbine if you want one. They're not hard to get a hold of.

Here's some pics of a few in action. [img:left] [/img] [img:right] [/img] [img:left] [/img] No gun in this pic, but a 7600 in 30-06 did the hard work. [img:left] [/img]

My buddy just bought a 760 in .244 Rem to complete his fathers collection of every cartridge offered in the 760.
Who knew the price these 760's chambered in the more uncommon cartridges commanded.
He payed $895 and the 2 others he looked at were $1000 and an astounding $1800!!!

Any +s or -s concerning carbine length or the synthetic stocks? Tzone hits the nail right on the head and answers your question perfectly in my opinion. I'm a remnant of the 60's, and as far as I am concerned a 760 should be made of blued steel and walnut. I could go further and get flamed here by saying that I think all guns should be made of blued steel and walnut, but I'll keep it to myself, LMAO. People tend to claim that the Carbine tends to be more accurate than the standard model because the barrel is stiffer. I don't know how true it is, and if it is, I'm willing to bet the difference is negligible. The carbine does shoulder and point(aim LOL) like a dream, the only downside is the 760 was only ever offered in the Carbine version in 30-06 and 308, but I can live with it. I have in stock in my parts drawer a Weaver Pivot Mount and a set of Pivot Rings for a 760. I keep them there and am keeping my eye out for a 760 in 35 Remington. If I find one, I'm going to grab it, and restock it with this piece of wood: Click on the link and it's the third picture down. http://macongunstocks.net/remington_model_760_7600_76_2_piece_riflestock_sets_90.html#Incidentally, if anyone is unaware when it comes to restocking a 760/7600, the model 870 20 gauge lightweight, 760, 7600, Model 6, Model 4, 740, 742, 7400 have the identical machining in the rear of the receiver, and all these models stocks will interchange.

I have owned two in 30-06. The first one was made in the 70s and given to me by my dad back in the 80s. I killed many deer and a few groundhogs with it. It is every bit as accurate as most of my bolt guns. I rarely hunt with it anymore but I would never part with it. The second one was a 1950s version that I inherited from an inlaw. Didn't care for it as much and ended up selling it.

Many years ago I had a M-760 in 270 Winchester. It rattled from all the mechanical stuff enabling the pump mechanism and I sold it for a bolt. My dad had one in 257 Roberts and it rattled too. It is also long gone.

Bought my 760 BDL brand new in 1975 and used it up until 2 years ago when I retired it.Had a Redfield 3-9 Lo-Pro mounted on it and never owned a better handling rifle. It would shoot 1" groups all day using Rem 165gr PSP.Between myself and my best friend you couldn't haul all the deer it killed with a tractor trailer. My middle son loves it so much he I just bought a left handed model off Gunbroker in 30-06 for $390 for him.He plans on putting the same model scope on his too.Buy one and never look back !

Isn't the 760/7600 affectionately called the 'Pa Semi' in the great state of Pennsylvania??

Did you have it rebarreled or punch it out?

Wink Man, this statement isn't quite accurate--->> "the only downside is the 760 was only ever offered in the Carbine version in 30-06 and 308......"
I own an original 760 carbine in .280 Remington and the barrel is stamped "Carbine", it's not a cut-down rifle barrel.
Keep your gun-hand ready and your eyes peeled.
