I posted this a few weeks ago and I don't think some of you believed me, but man I am getting crazy velocities from my 7x57 built on a Agentine Mauser and H 4350. And I know it isn't the chrony because a 6.5x55 shot moments before was getting right what the book said it should be getting.

I changed primers from last time and velocities went up even more. 49 grains of H4350 and a 139 grain Hornady with a Rem 9 1/2 averaged 3034 and itty bitty groups. 48 grains and a 154 Hornady averaged 2925 and itty bitty groups. There were no pressure signs in any manner whatsoever that I could tell. But, dang, that is 200 fps faster than what most of you guys are saying you get with comparable loads.

That beats what I'm getting with the same bullets in a 22" .280 Rem. But, I'm not cranking it up all the way.

I believe this was mentioned in the other thread, but it bears repeating: Just because your cases don't show obvious pressure signs, it doesn't necessarily mean that pressure isn't high.

Your velocities indicate, to me anyway, that you're pushing the pressure envelope with those loads. I'd kick it back a grain and see if the accuracy held.

Also, was your 1909 Arg. heat treated before it was re-barreled? Originals tend to be on the soft side, and those hot loads could cause set back issues.

I'm going back a few grains. I don't really have much desire to go that high, it is just a little crazy and it is only with H 4350. It is weird.

Does that lot of H4350 behave normally in other cartridges for you?

I had a chronograph like that once. It was the first model green Chrony, about 25 years ago. I found then when you put a bullet right through the middle of it, it never reads high again.

Well, it must have a special 7x57 feature because it reads true with everything else.

grin

My green Chrony has been gathering dust under my loading bench for almost 20 years now...........

The PACT is somewhere out in my dad's alfalfa field.

If they hadn't stopped making the metalized-paper screens for my Custom Chronograph, I'd still be using it.

Loved my M35. But when it became apparent Oehler wasn't going to be supporting them much longer, and prices for the Oehlers reached bodaciously ridiculous levels, I sold it and bought a CED M2, a new Leupy VX-II, and still had money left over......

IMO if your load's velocity exceed those listed in Hornady's book (who lists 7x57 loads for modern action)you might be playing with fire. Of course you rifle could have a loose bore too.
3000 fps w/a 140 is getting into 7x61 territory that is a lot bigger case built for a lot stronger rifle (Schultz & Larsen) than a lot of ex miliary Mauser 98s.

Allegedly, (the source being non other than JB) 2900 with the 139 Hornady is easily doable and completely safe in most rifles...so it isn't that hot. But, I'm not saying that I'm going to keep it up over 3000. I'm going to get it down to around 2900 and leave it at that. I was merely making the point that this particular rifle seems to get crazy velocities.

And, of course, then again 3000 with that bullet and a 7x57 may not be that hot. The Hodgdon website shows just over 2900 for 50 compressed grains of H4350 in the 7mm-08. With a little more case capacity, a 7x57 should do a little more than that.

If we load the 7x57 with the same pressures as the 30-06 (which is considerably lower than the 308 or 270 Win) this is what we get...

Cartridge : 7 x 57 mm Mauser
Bullet : .284, 139, Hornady SP 2820
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.071 inch or 78.00 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch or 558.8 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.

Matching Maximum Pressure: 60000 psi, or 413 MPa

or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 110 %

These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

Thanks, that is as I expected. Those loads are a little hot, but the really unusual thing is that I seem to get there with less powder than most do.

I'm just going to back down a bit to 46 or 47 grains and run it there if I can get the accuracy I want.

I am on my second Oehler 35P. Hopefully it will last a while yet. Ken Oehler reported, I think on the fire, here, that it was the obsolete technology applied to the printer aspect that caused these chronograpnhs to become obsolete, not the actual screens or coverter box.

I have held off posting as my 120gn GS HV bullet is lighter than the 139-140gn weights you are talking about but I get 3237fps over 51gn BL-C2 and Fed 215. Was watching the velocity gain per powder increment and stopped when the increase percentages changed. Get exceptional accuracy and performance.

I shoot that same load in my browning a bolt 7mm08 with a 22 " barrel and get around 2850 . I get good results on our small southern deer with it but am not sure how it would hold up at your velocities , especially on a close shoulder shot .

I've read about them over the years in the gun rags. I would appear that I have one those rifles with the mythical, fast barrel.
