I have the oppertunity to trade my blue colt gold cup for a series 70 colt commander in stainless. I know that this pistol is a shooter, the who has it has made some incrediable shots with, but I don't know what the value of the commander related to the gold cup is.

Greg,<BR>If your Gold cup is a series 70 or earlier and in good shape you will be on the losing end of the trade.<BR>For $700 bucks you can grab yourself a kimber compact that will flat smoke the commander in all arenas of performance.<BR>Think of how much it would cost to replace your Gold cup,not how much it is worth.<BR>Also consider the self loathing for parting with it 25 years from now after Colt is history.<BR>How many gun buds tell you stories of the pre-64 M70 they sold or traded off years ago?<BR>If ya just gotta have the commander gimme a bump on the E-mail with the particulars of your GC and I'll get you a value on it and the Commander so you can compare.<BR>Cheers!<BR>E4E

The gold cup is a series 80. It is in perfect shape, except for some holster wear, as I used it for my carry gun for two years. I really wanted a stainless, but I made the mistake of bringing my wife with me when I bought it. She freaked out that I wanted to spend 50 bucks more for a "shiny" gun.

Without going into values, which I am not all that current on. I just wanted to say that E4E is right on when he says the Kimber compacts will smoke a Colt Commander. I own several,.....ummmm, numerous Colts and am not knocking them, but the full size frame Colt 1911 is a better gun than the Commander. Which I also own one of. I would not judge the "shooting" abilities of the gun by the fact that the guy has made some incredible shots, if you really want it, take it to the range, shoot it and see. I would be amazed if it did not group at least 50% larger than your Gold Cup. Not that Commanders cannot group, but out of the box, without tweaking? I doubt it. Unless you are desperately in need of a slightly smaller carry gun, I would not make the trade.

I'd hang on to that Gold Cup, also, I don't think Colt even made the stainless version of the 1911 until the 80's, so a 70's Series Commander (alloy frame) or Combat Commander (steel frame)is probably Electroless Nickel rather than stainless.
