Thanks to everybody on the load info and for all the great pics. Blowtorch, my H carbine was modified much more than yours. It had the stock cut square, than a 3" inch piece of wood added followed by a recoil pad ( I said it was a project gun) plus D&T and sling studs. When I'm done I hope it looks as good as yours. Is your 99 one of the ones with fruit wood stock or is that walnut?

Mine is a Model H Carbine and it says it was built in 1928. I know it has been reblued at some time and it's obvious the stock was redone. I suppose it is walnut since it looks factory but it has lots of grain for a 99. Maybe it has been replaced. It has the scope so that's another modification. It actually is a pretty little rifle and very light and handy. The scope is an old Busnell Banner and is not very clear. I think it is a 1.5 to 4.5x. I wish I could find a scope in the same straight tube configuration to replace it since it does not adjust consistently. It shoots about 2" at 100 yards with 180 grain round nose loads. I think it would do 1" with a better scope. My eyes are not good enough to see iron sights anymore but I can shoot a peep sight very well. My old .22HP was made in 1920. It's a model "F" featherweight takedown model. It's original except for sling swivels and a drilled for a scope. I really would like to get a deer this year with the .303. Great cartridge. Sorry for helping turn this thread into a Savage 99 forum! Dee

Just come back in from the rifle range. I had 3 loads using H4895, 28-29 &30 gr, and hornady 160 gr FTX bullets (I know but I had to try them). I took five shots sighting in the gun with the light loads. After that I fired a 3 shot group at 50 yrds with each load. This is the first time I've used tang sights so I don't know what I'm capable of as far as accuracy. The 30gr load was right at 1", so I think I'll work from there. All the holes were clean, no keyholes, but 1 bad flier with the 28 gr load. It appears to be able to stablize these bullets. Blowtorch, you never have to apologize for talking about savages. Nice looking high power.
