Now that Phil and I have stired you interest in the .458 Winchester mated with AA 2230 powder, I am genuinely interested in your findings when you get the chance to try it.

This thread is exclusively for you mate. I believe a .458 in 2010 is not the same cartridge it was in 1956, so have some fun with it and tell us what you think. Your opinion will be valued by all the readers.

OK you guys, I'm not that easy, but you have taken advantage of my need to know..Finn Aagard used to bully me the same way and rave about the 458 and the bloody big holes it made in packy-derms, buff and waterhogs..MY dear friend George Hoffman, also liked the .458 pretty well.

But, one still has to wonder what evil could there be in punching out the .458 Win. chamber about 1/4" and having a 458 Lott and loading it down to 2100 FPS, so as to have less pressure. So don't bet I won't chamber mine to a Lott, load it like a .458 and not tell you!

Actually, I gave a lot of thought to the .458 Win. a couple of years ago when I loaded my 470 with a 500 gr. bullet to 2020 FPS and shot some buffalo with it, and it seemed to kill them about as well as it did at 2245 FPS...Then I used a 450-3 1/4 with 500 gr. bullets at 2100 and got the same hammer results on the black bulls..so my thinking was where did I go sour on the .458..it was all those bad stories that have haunted it for years, and I figured where there was that much smoke, had to be some fire I suppose.

I will only surrender if you both agree the 30-06 with 220 gr. Noslers is a viable buffalo rifle in a pinch! I believe it is, what say you!

Ray, I talked to North Fork and they are willing to do 30 caliber 220s in SS and FPS, but the minimum order is more than I can swing right now. Do you think there is a use for them and if I tried to sell the remainder off would people be interested?

I don't know, but I don't think there is a great demand for 220 gr. bullets in 30 caliber in our hi vel world today...

I would love a cup point .308, 220 gr. Northfork myself..GS Customs has flat nose solids in 220 gr. if I'm not mistaken..

I have some 220gn Woodleigh Welscores on the shelf but they are special and I won't waste them on just anything. Any of the 220gn at 2,500 fps or so is a very competent load for most anything so you won't get any dissagreement from me on that recommendation.

The 220 gr. Woodleighs are readily available from Huntingtons in the USA..Your right they are an awesome bullet and they seem to work as well on deer as they do on buffalo..they simply work. Something the old timers found out from using the 30-40 Krag with 220 gr. bullets at very low velocity btw.

Being able to eavesdrop on a conversation between John Woods, Phil Shoemaker, and Ray Atkinson is the type of thing that makes these forums so valuable. Sometimes it�s worth taking a moment just to appreciate it.
