M1 if you are a serious LR hunter. CDS if you are a mountain hunter that might need to crank that turret for a 300-600 yd shot. Just my opinion.

What is the range is 600 the max. I have not had anything like the turet scopes . I have LR guns but have stayed away this kind of scopes just thinking about getting into it LR shooting that is.

the certificate enclosed with the CDS scopes lets you get one elevation knob marked in yards for the bullet/muzzle velocity and atmospheric conditions and elevation. this in nice, because once that's done, you just ping the target with the LRF and dial the knob to what the range finder tells you.

the M1 knobs are marked in MOA and need a range card or ballistics program to give you how many MOA for X distance. a little more complex but more flexible.

"Most" sane folk would never shoot past 600yds at any animal. CDS should get you to 700 with a standard round.. Magnum farther.

I have custom caps but haven't installed any of them yet.. I'm having too much fun shooting at clay pigeions at 1000yds +/- with just the standard 1/4moa click cap which comes with the CDS system.. Easy enough to create a cheat sheet for the standard cap if you do chose so..

I'm running a "lowly" old VX-I 3x9x40 with the CDS and I can take 130's to 1000 yds in a 260rem aiming dead on..

Tracking has been flawless to 1000yds and back to 100yds and every yardage needed in between time after time again. I'm also a fan of a lower dial on a hunting rig..

You're right most sane folks don't. I spect people would be fairly suprised if they actually new how many folks have actually taken game past 500 (LRF'd) and even more so if they new how many do it from time to time and not just once in a moon.

Many (and it's fine with me) run turrets and yet have never taken game past 400.......

Dotz, CDS will work great for a long long way. The dotz will be quickest by far and once you begin to shoot past your dotz then the turrets take over. I have one scope set with dotz to 700 and can kill on demand with the set up and another set to 600 and can kill on demand with it as well.

Would like to try the CDS or use turrets more but aside from targets @ 500-1K I have no need for them.

Just my way

I would prefer the standard MOA on any turret but for the casual long range types the CDS seems to work fine. The only problem I have with them is when you start getting out past 5-600 yards the ballistics programs don't always match up with the real world and that is a problem for me and why I use MOA. Inside of 600 it does a good job for the most part.

Yeah... 'twer me, I'd shoot the rifle scope first pretty extensively and get the actual drops figured out for that load, rifle, and scope... THEN send in to Leup for the custom cap with the actual derived data.

Then, of course, I'd get a wild hair up my butt and change the bullet I was using or something and have to start all over! grin

I would agree with that but the problem still remains that I hunt hear in Washington at around 1000-1500ft in elevation. When I go out of state the stuff don't work at 10000ft so back to MOA.

Out to ranges of about 700 yards, atmopsheric conditions don't affect the ballistics as much as one might think, especially when considering big game hunting. Past 700, it starts to matter a lot more. So the CDS out to 600-700 yards should be very versatile, but I agree, shoot and validate your balistics and send that data for the custom turret.

Like I said for the casual long range stuff it is fine. If you want to go introduce 5" of error into a 500 yard shot that is up to you, at 700 it can be over a foot when all else is equal and comparing an elevation of 1000 to 10000.

MOA, IPHY or Mill systems work for all bullets, velocities, and elevations at any distance. Nothing eles does

I have used the various range-compensating reticles in various brand name scope and they work for my uses as I'm not a true long range shooter as I see the term defined of late. 600 yds would be the max range I'd care to take game at this point in the kind of hunting I enjoy.

That said I have a new little '06 coming and aim to put CDS Leupy on, work up a load and send for the custom turret. It should be fun.
