Dude, as one GSP owner to another - that cover is lookin' like lab trough to me. You know, the kind of cover where even a springer can find birds?

COCKER!!!!!

Man, I had that coming!

I used to run shorthairs. Problem is that where I hunt, EVERYTHING runs, even the doves.

Pheasants, Chukars, and Gambel's in desert terrain and big running pointing dogs don't mix. Close-working pointers end up being big running pointers pretty fast, cuz everything keeps moving ahead fast. Creep turns to more, and pretty soon you got a flusher.

As to Labs, the 110-degree heat in September and October makes Labs fall over by 8:00 a.m. with heatstroke. No can do Labs in this country.

Tough, little-bodied steamrollers that hunt close and hard, and dig under cover to root 'em out has seemed to work best.

Jack is an English-strain Springer Spaniel with a pedigree like you wouldn't believe. Forget Field Trial Champions, in the UK, they have National Field Champions, as in ONE dog, champ of the entire UK for the year. THE cham-PEEN of the UK! If I told you how many Jack has in his three-generation ... well, let's just say it's no ACCIDENT he finds birds.

I'm waiting on pictures of some shorthairs chin-deep in pheasants, cheese and blind mice and all, you know. he he

Knife to a gunfight comes to mind.

Rick- I'm assuming those are pay-to-play pheasants or is California have that good a wild pheasant population. Not being a smart-ass this time, just curious.-Mike

Mike:

Those are completely wild birds, and that is not California. That is Mexico.

I was there three weeks ago (the pic with the seven pheasants) and it was unreal. At this time of year, when most of the crops are harvested and the birds are concentrated in the cut milo, it's as good as the Dakotas.

Rick,

Sorry man, I couldn't resist. I figured my comment would rattle the door on a few dog kennels.

I'd take more photos, but ya know, photos of GSPs and dead pheasants are kinda old hat. Springers and pheasants are much more of a novelty .

(Pssst: Jack is a fine looking dog - don't ask me to repeat that in public.)

Sure. I could use a lab but I don't have all day to wait for the results!!!

Rick - That's a lot of birds for CA. Nice work!! What's the story with that?

Here's Sadie with some finished product......

This dude eats pointers for lunch - Waterfowl, now that's the realm that pointer owners can only dabble around the edges of. Unless they're fond of pointersicles

Labs make good survival dogs - after they don't find any game, all that body mass will feed you for days...

This Lab doesn't have any trouble finding birds - and he's not too good to bring em' back to hand unlike too many of the pointers I've hunted with. Here's a pic of a limit of sharptail he managed to find.
