I like the 1-4 Leupold in the shotgun/muzzle loader version, heavy duplex crosswire and 75 yard parallax correction. It's what I use on my Guide Gun, my MZ and something else I can't recall at the moment.

My first choice for your situation would be a receiver peep of some sort.

A little different from a lot of the folks above.... I like the 4-6 range for hunting from a stand in thick woods. I've never had trouble with a fixed 4 or 6 getting on walking/trotting deer at very close range. I don't shoot at running deer unless I'm trying to put a second bullet in them. I appreciate the 4-6 range for finding tight shooting lanes through brush. I generally like at least 4 but generally don't go over 6...one reason I use fixed 4's and 6's a lot. I like the 2-7 as well.

Just a thought that you don't "have" to go with a low power scope. A mid-power range has a lot of use in thick stuff.

You mentioned that funds were limited so you need to look at the weaver V-3 (1 TO 3X) about 135 to 145 bucks! The 1x is a TRUE 1x and about as fast as it gets. Good optics and good reviews from a lot of shooters. Check out the lever action forums for a lot more opinions or just search for weaver V3.

For the price it's hard to beat the Bushnell Banner. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on a rifle that didn't recoil any harder than what you are using.

I like my fixed 2 or 2.5 (I forget which) Bushnell Scopechief in the brush. Turn it to the post and I'm a happy camper.

The three closest deer I have shot with a rifle (20 yards or less) were wearing 3-9X40s and there wasn't a problem. Wasn't planning on shooting them that close at the time but it just ended up that way. I wouldn't feel handicapped with a straight 4x for as close or as far as I would plan on shooting game.

I have the first scope I ever bought. It's a Bushnell Scopechief 1.5x4.5 with the standard wires and a pop up post for poor light conditions. It has been on numerous rifles since 1970, and has been flawless. I have it on my 94 Swede I built up last year, and I think it will stay there for the duration. For our northern Wisc. area it works great.
