Just curious as to what the general opinion is from those that have owned a Steyr Prohunter. I have handled a couple, but never shot one. Thinking a Prohunter or Prohunter Mountain would make a good .308.

I have used a Steyr Prohunter on a .280 for about 10 years now. It is my go-to weapon (and I have several). It is accurate, light and well engineered. The stock is ugly, but very utilitarian. When hunting Canada, I can remove two spacers off the stock to compensate for heavy clothing and when hunting south Georgia, you can put the spacers back on and keep the same LOP. Go ahead and buy one. You won't be sorry.

I'd love to have one in 9.3x62.

I had Prohunter in 280rem. Bought used from a coworker. Very accurate and built like a tank. Receiver is said to be proof tested to withstand 150K psi. I sold it, could not get used to the synttetic stock.

I bought a used Steyr Mountain in .243 for son, just removed all the spacers and it fits him perfect. His first three shot group ever in a centerfire was 1 inch with this gun. I shot it a lot myself, its light, well balanced and has a decent trigger. It is consistently accurate with any ammo I put through it.

I had one of the 20" barreled rifles in 308 for a while. It was very accurate. I liked the trigger and safety.

I did not care for the bolt handle. I had to end up mounting the scope higher than I really wanted to get it to clear.

I have noticed that a couple of guys have commented about it being light. Not in my book. I sold mine primarily because it was too heavy for a short barreled rifle. The 20" mountain rifles weigh 7.3 lbs and the standard rifles are 7.7. With a scope and mounts you are looking at a 8-9lb rifle.

i had the flat bolt handle on mine swapped out for the small round handle, but the root of the bolt handle still kept scopes pretty high.

I've owned a couple of these guns, and was happy with them. The "butter knife" bolt handles take some getting used to, but both of the guns I owned shot very well. IIRC, they use the same base sets as a Browning ABolt, so finding replacement bases isn't difficult.
