HB,
They are very accurate rifles.
The nicer ones with the walnut stocks are bringing somewhere around $350-$425 or so in the type shape you describe. They can be had cheaper though.

Being a shooter & not a real collector, just yet, I'd probably have it punched to .223 caliber if it were mine....But, I can just hear the moans for doing that...LOL.

Thanks rockinbbar for the quick response. What rate of twist are in these Bbls? Do they handle lighter bullets better than heavies? I have a .223 already and it likes 40gr up to 55gr bullets real well. I would probably leave it in orriginal chambering.

I think the Savage will like anything from 40 to 60 grs.
I've shot them with no loss of accuracy.
You get into the 65 grainers & you might need a tad more twist. I just generally stick to 55gr PSP's & 55gr ballistic tips in my .223. They both have the same point of impact at 100 yds.
The .222 should shoot the .55's really well.

I guess that I'm about 180 degrees out from Barry's opinion of the Savage 340 series.

Through most of their production run, they were entry level economy grade rifles. The bolt has 1 lug, the receiver has a split rear receiver ring, so you must use a Weaver side mount if you want a scope on it, and it uses a lot of stamped parts. Frank DeHaas wrote a chapter on the Savage 340 family in his Bolt Action Rifles book that you might want to review prior to spending much $$.

If it is minty and you can get into it for $250 +/-, it might be an OK truck gun, but if you were going to spend anymore than than, I think that you'd get a lot more value from a Savage 11/111 package gun at Wal-Mart with the the new trigger.

I will note for the record that I do have a Savage 242-S deluxe in 22 Hornet and I have owned several other Savage 340s, including a couple of Savage 340Vs in 225. I never owned any of them for long and I never really trusted that action chambered in 225, although I did give 1 to my Wife's niece to shoot coyotes with when she was going to college in Spearfish, SD.

The 340s are plentiful in my area in .30-30, mostly in poor
to average condition, and prices are cheap. Hornets and 222s
are kind of hard to find and sell for more. I have encountered
one .223 and one .225 in the last 10 years, wish I would bought the .223.

Yes, they were the economy rifle of the day, but like Jericho mentioned, most are seen in 30-30. The scope is side mount, but not as hard to look through as a side mounted Winchester 94.
They have their market, But....like Jeff, what you would pay for a really nice 340, you could buy a Savage M11 in .223 & have an accurate rugged gun that would drive tacks from now on...

Thanks for the information guys. The rifle im looking at is suppose to be in real good to excellent shape and a tack driver from what the guy tells me and what I can tell from the pictures. The rifle comes with the side mount weaver base & rings and cheap Tasco scope, New RCBS Dies, about 65 loaded rounds of ammo and 30 once fired cases. I have talked him down to $235 for everything which includes shipping. I guess you could say I got the rifle and all the stuff for $200.00 cause its going to cost about $35.00 for shipping to the FFL. Did I pay too much? I havn't sent any cash yet!
Let me know how I did.
Thanks

I had one in .22 Hornet that was a real shooter. It looked like someone had wrapped a logging chain around it, hooked it to their truck and drug it to the gun show where I bought it. But it would shoot.
I have never seen a triple duece that was not accurate with at least a couple of loads.
If you don't want it for $235, send it to me and I will make it a good home.

Well it finally got here! These are pretty nice little rifles. The one I bought the blueing is great except for the bolt knob. it has worn off and turned brown. Not rust! Its just brown! The bore is bright. The stock has a small gouge which could easily be repaired and a few minor scratches here and there nothing serious. Not sure what WEAVER had in mind when they designed the side mount scope, base and rings. Something ill have to get use too. The cheap Tasco 4X Scope will probably be replaced real soon. This may turn into a project gun. I may have the bolt knob re blued. And I can probably do the walnut stock myself. Shouldn,t be too hard.
Thanks for the replys

Hit the gunshops and pawnshops yesterday and handled
6 different 340s all in .30-30 of course. Highest price was
$219.95, asked a couple of employees if they had any other
calibers in that model or had sold any recently, they all
replied with no.

Well I got the 340D .222 to the range this morning, 29 degrees and frost on the shooting benches. I put a target on the 50 yard mark and fired the first shot. It hit way to the right. The elevation was good. I made the scope adjustment and fired another round. This one hit just below the bulls eye. I moved it up 8 clicks and fired another round. Smack dab in the bulls eye almost took the little black diamond out of the orange poster. I marked the holes and headed over to the 100 yard backstop. The first round hit exactly 2" above the bulls eye I fired another and this one hit 1/2" directly beside the last one. I figured that wasn't too bad considering the sandbags I was useing wasn't high enough and slidding all over the bench because of the frost. I guess the Cheap Trashko 4X scope wasn't much help either. It shoots pretty good, all things considered. I have the barreled action removed from the stock right now. Im going to give it a face lift and probably a New 3X9X40 scope and give it another try.
Thanks

The SAVAGE 340D got its face lift today. Im not sure what the person used on its last stock refinishing. I think it was some kind of Polyurethane Hardwood floor finish. After removeing the stock from the action, I went to WalMart this morning and got some spray foam stripper sprayed it on and let it sit about 45 min. That took the top coat off. Elbo grease and 100 grit sand paper took the rest. I finally got it down to bare wood. WOW! It had a beautifull multi colored multi granied walnut stock. After carefully sanding out all the dents and scratches with 220 grit, I wiped it down with a damp cloth and sanded with a soft steel wool, then did it one more time. Wiped it down with cheese cloth and applyed the first coat of Birchwood Casey stock finish. After three hours of drying I lightly rubbed with soft steel wool. It looks like a different piece of wood. This is a hobby that I really enjoy. Especially with this kind of outcome!
I wish I could post pictures for you guys.
Thanks

It means, post some pictures, goofus. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> We want to share in the pride of your new baby.

I just took delivery of a Stevens 325B in 30-30 (same action but "hardwood" stock and spoon handle bolt). I got it on GB for $110. The finish is a little rough but I don't care. It's a "lender." I hope it shoots cast bullets well. The magazine appears aftermarket and doesn't work worth a poop, but I know where to get new originals for a mere $35 (yikes). It is not drilled for scope mounts but it is factory drilled for receiver sight. I would like to find a peep for it. Anybody got one they want to part with?

You need the Savage #175. They show up now and again on eBay. I don't know if there are any others.

Savage...never say "never".
