I was just given a rifle that belonged to a man that I have known all my life (Hershel was his name) and passed away a couple of months ago. Its a Mauser 98 with german markings that he chambered in .264 Win Mag. Without going into to much detail this gun was probably made in the late 50's (before commercially available) or as late as the early 60's(but I doubt it was that late). Hershel had several rifles he made, all on 98 Mausers. It has a scope on it that is a Hertel & Reuss Kassel 8x31.6 with a heavy post instead of crosshairs. Does anyone know anything about this particular scope? I have never heard of it but remember looking thru it a few years back when he was showing me some of his rifles. I am pretty sure the scope is from the 40's or 50's era as that is when Hershel made all of his rifles. Any info would be appreciated.

They used to make scopes for Weatherby under their "Imperial" line. Like all things German, fine optics and quality but youhaave to realize the glass is old technology. jorge
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Yes I would assume that anything 60 to 70 years old would have to be considered old technology. Hell some things 10 years old are now old technology.

It is an ancient German mark which makes left now NICKEL AG. It is a ancient scope, but this mark was a part of big marks there is 40/50 years
