OK, I have decided a peep sight is the way to go for me, now I have another question or two. I read the whole thread on the Marbles tang mounted peep sight, and I sort of like the look of that style sight; how does that sight compare functionwise to the reciever mounted Lyman sight? It looks like the Lyman would be easier to get a fine adjustment, true? Also is there any advantage to the longer sight plane you would get from having the Marbles mounted further aft? Does the Marbles fold down to fit in a scabboard, then fold up to shoot to the same POI? If so the Marbles seems to be a bit trimmer rifle overall.

Thanks for your input. Lastly does anybody know where I best look to buy either of these two sights?

John

I asked the same question about Marbles sights a month or so ago on this site. All of the knowledgeable guys here said the Marbles sight is not as good as Marbles would imply for their "old" style sights, so I steered away. Some have said the receiver sights go better with post war guns and tang peeps with prewar. As much as I like the tang peeps, I'd agree with them and went with a receiver sight for my 1954 EG.
I've seen the Lymans and you wouldn't go wrong, but I bought a Redfield 70 reciever sight from Loggah and am VERY happy with it, and the Redfied 70 is period correct for 50's guns and maybe earlier and seem to go about $100 on eBay or Gunbroker and with some of the sight collectors, maybe a little more.
No notch req'd in the stock, but did shorten the vertical travel screw by 1/8" however to avoid a mark.

Here's a pic of it

Perhaps get the reciever sight now, and wait to score a tang peep at a good price down the road if you decide that'w what you really want--the tang peeps can get pricey at $ 200.oo or more unless you shop a lot or luck out.

Thanks Steve, great information, just what I need to know. Mine is an early fifties EG also, so your research pertains to my situation perfectly.

A good solution for a simple tang mounted sight is the Williams. Functionally, it compares to the Redfield and Lyman for less bucks. But...it's getting hard to find too. Once upon a time they could be had for 40 bucks.

Or just a folded piece of cardboard taped in place, with a peep hole punched in it. A guy in our old camp lost the slide out of his receiver sight and jerry-rigged one that way. Shot a fat little doe with it.
