Anybody have any experience with this area? I'll be headed up there in August for some scouting and then again in September, just looking for a place to start. Thanks.

Good area, lots of elk and some fair bulls as well. Rifle or bowhunting?

North end of the Snowy Range, west of Laramie. Arlington on I-80 is one way into it.

Gotcha, thinking I called some yotes in that area once upon a time.

With any luck it will be all archery hunting but I am planning on rifle as well. Not expecting a monster bull although I've heard there are few big boys in there. Just looking or a fun, quality hunt.

I hunted this area a number of times in the '80's and '90's for deer and for elk. I spent nearly all my time in the eastern side of 11 but I know hunters that swear by all parts of the area. If you have cow permits you'll be almost assured of success. I can't recall ever seeing a really huge bull here but I consider any mature bull a nice trophy and there certainly are some of them around. It is a relatively small area and there are a good number of hunters compressed together - opening weekend will be especially crazy. Be alert for hunters spooking elk to you. Don't be too hung up on trying to find a remote spot where noone else has been because there aren't many spots like that in this area. I would poke around Foote Creek on the east side of the main Forest Service road that bisects the area. Good luck!

Rock Creek to the east is a little nasty but holds elk. Most of the country east of White Rocks also holds elk. Let me find some maps and I can get you into an area that is about four square miles with no roads. As ttpoz stated, this is about as remote as you can get in here.

I would also spend a little time during archery season down on the Wick Management area. I have seen loads of elk in the aspens during bow season.

A friend of mine who has guided the area for several years can pull a 300 or bigger bull out each year but he hunts the higher, southern end of the unit in the thick and nasty stuff.

Let me know when you come for scouting, if I have some time, I will run up and show you some spots. It's only 35 minutes from my house.

I've seen good bulls between Windy Peak and Sand lake in the very south end of the hunt area, but if they're spooked they may just run across the hunt area boundary. I sent some dummies from Texas there once, and told them not to scout the area before elk season, but since they had deer licenses, too, they went anyway and ran two 6 point bulls into area 12, not to be seen again during the rifle elk season in area 11. Those boys were lucky in drawings but couldn't take instruction well.

DrHJH,
I'm somewhat lucky in drawings and I do take instruction well. Thanks for the tip.

Been hunting it since 2000 or so. Will hunt it again this year.
