I own both although my MG is a blue version. I prefer the MG with lighter loads but other then that I like both versions.

Good to hear the earlier 29's/629's hold up. I personnaly like the look of the "heavy barrel" on the 629's over the tapered barrel of the MG.

Thanks all for your insight. Jim thank you in particular for the pix/articles and good advise.

That makes two of us, except I'm pretty darn sure it does. wink

I'm with these guys too.
Last winter I was deciding this issue myself.
Both models were available to me at my local gun shop, and in a side by side comparison I like the feel of the standard 629, (just a little more front heavy).
Also, (it seemed), the wider trigger and hammer fit my grip.
At the time of purchased I also got a 'X' (SW 500) rubber grip for it.
Good luck in your choice.
FYI:
I could not find the 629 4inch on the current SW site?
Did SW drop it from 2010?

Everything you now do is something you have chosen to do. Some people don't want to believe that. But if you're over age twenty-one, your life is what you're making of it. To change your life, you need to change your priorities.

People that own the MG seem to like them. I've owned 2 629's......a 6in. and my current 4in. Chose the 4in. (629-6) over the 6in. (629-1 actually) due to it being a bit more easily carried afield. Targets showed no difference whatsoever and recoil was of little difference either.

I also felt a need for the "upgrades", whether real or imagined. I do know that I made the right decision for me and the 4in. 629 does all that I could ask of it. I took a nice blacktail buck at 65 yards with it this past season (open sights) and I can't imagine either the 6in. version or the MG having delivered any better results.

Nice to have choices.......good luck with yours.

The endurance package on N frame Smiths started in the -5 version of the blued model 29 and the -3 version in the stainless 629 though there were a few 629-2E variants with it.

The mountain gun concept was started with the non endurance package 629-2 mountain revolver.

The first mountain gun in .44 mag was the 629-3 and it does have the endurance package.

Personally I would not spend the extra cash for a mountain gun I would just get a nice pre lock standard 4 inch 629-3 or -4. Or even a -5 model.

The 629 -5 is where the MIM parts were added and the -6 has the locking feature.

I love the older guns also but for shooters the endurance package guns are better. I have seen way too many 29's and early 629's with problems.
