I always figured it was upside down, I would want the smaller hair on the bottom so it would assit me in holdover, but I actually see no advantage over the standard duplex with any of the other reticles..the std. duplex has served me to perfection for over 50 years, I see no reason to change although I did try them all, the exhuberence of youth I guess! smile

you never lose the thin duplex in low light?

Reticle choice is subjective, as shooting light dictated by vegetation, etc. that can obscure light early and late, as well as make reticles harder/easier to contrast can vary considerably in different areas.

There is a place for heavier reticles IMHO, as I have made shots with some Heavy Duplex, #4s, and even Mil Dots that have heavy outer post i.e. 6-24 4200, that allowed shots a regular plex, and certainly the 'fine duplex' reticles would not have made.

Glass has much improved and a thin reticle WILL get lost in certain conditions.

Perhaps a day will come when in lieu of variable 'magnification' we can have a variable 'reticle' for various shooting conditions.

Im pondering the same thing. Does anyone have the post and duplex in a 4.5-14? If so can a pic thru that particular scope be provided? I have been told that the p&d in the 4.5-14 is basicallt like the std dplx. And thats still to thin for my liking. The hvy dplx is just too "cluttered". There has to be a happy medium somewhere.

280Ack, I think the "wide duplex" is the best for lowlight.. it seems to be a great compromise between the standard and heavy.. Try it out..

I can't stand the wide duplex. If the thick part of the bars stop that far out from the center then what's the point of having them?

hmmmm, I never noticed it being that far out... Not saying you are wrong, at all.. will check this eve and see if I notice it..

Maybe I was mislead when I bought the scope.. might be a different reticle!

Sometimes folks have mistakenly said wide duplex when it was really heavy duplex.

Also there's more than one weight of heavy duplex. The one that goes in the 1.75-6x32 is very heavy. The posts come in close to the middle, and the center crosswire is 1" thick at 100 yards on 6x.

Some felt it covered too much target or the view was cluttered, but it isn't for picking the heads off chipmunks at 400 yards. It is for laying a big, bold, hard to miss "bullet goes here" sign on a beast's shoulder as the light goes down.

Ok so I just got my scope back from leupold after having them install the post and duplex reticle in my mk4 4.5-14

First off let me say I got the scope back to my doorstep 2 hrs shy of week from being shipped un real service

I am very happy with my choice in reticle and will be sending my others off soon to get the same.

Definately a little heavier than the std duplex in my 4.5-14 varix 3 and the 2 3.5-10 vari x 3s I have but not too heavy and cluttered like the heavy duplex a very nice compromise

I have the P&D in a FXII 6x and for general hunting I think it is a VERY good choice. There are better ones for specific duties such as long range, or close 'brush' hunting but for a do it all scope I think its a great way to go.

I had the custom shop put the P&D in VX-3 2.5-8x.

I really like it.

Yes, that looks just about right to me also. Im curious if they could put in a standard plex with the Post and duplex dimensions? Im also curious how much it is for the 2.5x8x36 ordered with the post and duplex straight from the custom shop.

That's what I did, ordered it straight from the custom shop with the P&D installed. If you go to the Leupold site, you can order it and get the price on the Custom Shop page:
