I'm going elk hunting for the first time this fall. It will be a cow tag. Wondering if a calf in distress will work like a fawn in distress works to draw in does and what it sounds like.

No doubt it'll work good on bringing bruins in, I'd take a pass on it..

Sometimes it does bring the bears and 'yotes but I've had bears come to me while bugling/cow calling too. To me the best use of a whining calf is when trying to slow/catch up to a herd that is moving in heavy/moderate timber. There have been times the girls have stopped to wait for a bleating calf to catch up with 'em. My dad popped a big cow while we followed a herd late one morning while I was "whining" behind him. He got off a quick shot as they realized their mistake. We both felt pretty bad at doping the girls like that and have not killed like that since.

I am not very good at game calling. But the calf call is an exception. We have shot a few cow elk with the calf call, and it was easy. We walked through the woods until we busted up a group of elk. then we set up in a good spot and called using the calf call. Hopefully you can get a calf to stick around close and help you. The calf will really bawl like a big baby. The cows came running back in. Worked very well. Tom.
