I didn't shoot as well as I wanted today, I was hoping to get a 6-7" group.

My groups were (5-shots at 1000 yds): 8.75, 10.563, 9.125

My aggregate was 9.479. That was good for a third place finish in Light Gun AGG out of 10 shooters.

The winning AGG was 7.667, and the #2 AGG was 9.375. However, I did shoot the best AGG in my relay (there were two relays of 5 shooters each separated by an hour and a half or so--this means conditions change between relays and makes a difference in scores). I also shot the second smallest group in my relay, and tied for first in score. In fact, I tied for first in score overall for the whole Light Gun match.

When I was pulling targets for the second relay--after the second relay had shot their second round, it was looking like I might win for best Light Gun agg overall. However, during their third round conditions became very steady, and a couple guys shot very well. The small group of the match was shot that round and was 4.875. The next smallest group was also shot in that round, and was 6.125. I wound up shooting the #5 smallest group of the 30 groups fired form both relays.

I got a plaque for the first place tie in Light Gun score--I was a 133-1X out of a possible 150.

BTW, they give plaques for first place finished for score and group aggregate. They give t-shirts to who shot the smallest group. They compete both the Light Gun category (17 lb weight limit, three-5 shot groups) and Heavy Gun (no weight limit, three 10-shot groups). I only shot Light Gun this time. Many guys shoot their light gun in both classes. I don't know if I want to do that again...........

My best group today wasn't a lot better than my best group last month (at my first ever 1000 yd match with the 6mm Rem varmint barrel I shot the throat out of). However, my worst group today was much better than my worst group last time. Last month I shot 10.125, 9.875, and 25.00, which put me in the bottom third. My score was dead last at 104.

I guess I did make an improvement. Most of that improvement was in equipment. The biggest factors were: going from a Sendero stock to a real benchrest stock with a 3" wide flat fore end and the proper balance, and a heavy benchrest style front rest (Bald Eagle instead of the Hoppe's).

Next in importance was the extra 6+ lbs in rifle weight, that in conjunction with the proper front rest greatly reduced moment of the rifle under recoil. It came straight back vs coming back and twisting. At that same level of importance was my load--it was much more consistent, with lower extreme spreads and much better concentricity. The load was a little more accurate, but the biggest factor improving my AGG was NOT shooting a terrible group like I did last month.........I think that speaks more to consistency than accuracy.

The Nightforce 32X scope instead of the 14X Leupold was a help, but it was not as much of a factor as the other stuff. The new chambering, 6.5x284 vs 6mm Rem helped a little in that the BC of the 142 SMK is significantly better than the 107 SMK.

My loads are close to where they should be--I had minimal vertical dispersion. Most of my dispersion was horizontal, which is symptomatic of the wind. Regardless, I am sure fine tuning my loads a bit more will improve my scores.

I did mess up a couple things. With my scope set on 32X, my dot was rather small looking in the 4" square at the center of the bull. I should have decreased the power until the dot filled the square. This would have given me a more consistent aim point.

I also "held off" today, based on where my last sighter went as opposed to adjusting the scope one last time. I am not sure that was the best way to do it. No doubt, a tweak of my shooting technique will help as well.

The Rifle Basix 2-6 oz trigger is not very good. It varies in pull weight when set near it's lower limit, and that is very distracting. It is fine when set on it's max setting and would make a great varmint gun trigger, but I need a Jewell so I can get a consistent 1.5 to 2 oz pull.

My Sierra Ballistics program was dead on again with how much I needed to "come up" from a 100 yd Zero. The program said 26.91, I wound up with 26.625. Interestingly, I had 5.375 of minutes of windage in form a 100 yd zero in no wind. That translates to about 53.75" of bullet drift at 1000 yds. No wonder the wind is a big player!

The "heavy sand" I got from Bruno's (and available elsewhere) works very well. I had my front rest bag and my rear rest bag filled with it. It is something like three times as heavy as regular sand.

The Night Force 8-32x56 scope with the dual dot reticle is awesome. It works--period. The do it fine, but I would also be okay with a fine crosshair.

The Krieger barrel is great. No measurable erosion after the 33 rounds I fired in the match, compared to where the throat was before the match. Maybe I will shoot both the Light Gun and Heavy Gun class with this rifle next month...............

Congrats on the match. The holding vs. dialing is a personal thing from what I have read. You will find your technique and progress more and more. Shooting in both LV and HV will give you the experience in reading or getting screwed by the wind. And remember one thing

More + Shooting = GOOD

What does it mean when the primers fall out of the case?
