All,
I just bought a near-mint Model 77 (tube feed) but I had never seen one before and know nothing about them. I went strictly by my impression that the rifle was the result of some very nice machine work by Winchester. Can anyone tell me the good, bad or otherwise? I won't be able to pick it up for a week, and I'm wondering what to expect.

Kragman1: I have owned several Winchester Model 77's and they have operated very well for me and were pleasingly accurate. I have owned both the tube feed and the clip feed models. I think I just have one left and its the clip feed model. Never had a scope on any of them but again the accuracy with open sights has pleased me in the past. Let us know how yours shoots. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

kragman1,
I have my Grandfather's Model 77 Winchester tube feed 22. I love that old gun. I am sure you will like yours. Like VG I have never scoped mine.

Very nice guns, built before Winchester went downhill in the 60s. One quirk of 77s is that the barrel is pinned in and you have to remove it to disassemble and clean the action. Under the circumstances I'd recommend a dry lube that won't collect dirt because you won't want to have to clean it very often.

My father has a clip fed version and although it hasn't had a scope on it; I was always pleased with how it shot. Shot my first critter with one, nice guns.

I bought one in 1964, new from dealer stock even though production had been discontinued, IIRC. Surprisingly left-friendly, with the operating handle on the left side.
There seems to be quite a bit of interest in them among the classic .22 fans over on Rimfirecentral.

That don't look like it will work but if you go to Gunbroker and query on Winchester 77 magazine in parts you'll get a handful of hits.
