My buddy just worked me up a load where 51gr of varget is pushing the little blue meanies 3130 in my 22" rock 5R barrel. apparently its shooting around half MOA in the limited practice he has had with it.
Would you feel this to be enough for elk if the situation came up?

I shoot 130 grain Triple Shocks in my Kimber 270 WSM. Kills the hell out of elk. No problem. Great bullet.

My reference is the 168g TTSX for my.308 Win, but I would be very surprised if you had a problem with the 130's.

They'll just lose alot of steam beyond 200 yards, being shorter and wider than a 130 270. Should work good to 200, though.

Would you feel this to be enough for elk if the situation came up? It's not my first choice by any means, but if you are liking the load, then go with it. Casey

Not elk hunting but in my 308 I load them over 47 grains of Ramshot TAC, I have been up to 49 grains but results did not improve. I loaded 5 over 51 grains of Varget last night. This filled the case to the very top so it was a very compressed load, Barnes bullets recommended varget and I wanted to try it. I cannot imagine how to get 52 grains inside of that case....

starting to think about an elk load for my 300 saum for a fall '11 hunt. the 130 TTSX's shoot pretty well (and i am assuming at about 3400 fps). will likely be my choice for whitetail this year.
should i stick to this for elk next year or just go ahead and go to a 150 at 3150-ish fps?
the other choice is a 180 accubond at 2900 fps, but after a frustrating day at the range today with those loads my confidence in them is falling.

I have shot a quite a few deer with the 130TSX at about 3000fps out of a slow load in my -06.
I have never recovered a bullet from 20 to 435 yards. They work great. I would not hesitate to use one on an elk at any time from any angle.
For comparison, they seem to penetrate more and do as much damage as the 180 CoreLokts that I used to use.
