Those are some of the best photos I have ever seen. I love them. You will treasure them for years. That was some beautiful country. I love to hunt some lopes in the snow like that, what state was that? Thanks!

7mm08 is plenty, I've done it, partition went right through both lungs just like you would expect. INternal damage wasn't as dramatic as my 270, but the elk was plenty dead within about a minute or two. It did walk off a bit but didn't go far. Any broadside shot up to 200 + should be fine and straight on would be OK too if closer. I probably wouldn't try a quartering away shot with this caliber.

With respect to the previous poster, I wouldn't hesitate to take any shot with a 7mm-08 that I'd take with a 270 Win.

Super pics!

As for the 7/08, it'll do any of us quite well as long as we do our part.

Mine's loaded with 139 Horn's for this falls elk hunting. Tons of bullets available that will do you quite well.

Dober, having used that combo a good bit in the fall, I noticed the flat base giving a tad better accuracy, not much, and some say they may hold up better that BTs in general. Wondering which you use? I assume it's not the SSTs.

Now doubt, with the exception of the 788 in 7/08 I bought a while ago I never got the Bt to shoot nearly as well as the flat base. Guess there's always exceptions..grin

Point being, I prefer the flat base.

If you will accept that the 7mm-08 is a ballistic twin of the old 7mm Mauser: the 7mm Mauser was used to take virtually anything that walked the African continent including elephant. Basically, the argument is that a 7mm-08 is easy to hit with while the 478.5 Nuclear Magnum and similar rounds are easier to kill with but harder to hit with because the rifle can inflict fatal injury at both ends. Enjoy the 7mm-08. I own three of them.

At extreme ranges, the 7mm-08 actually hits a bit harder than its parent .308 Win. and the .308 is another round that has been used to kill everything.

Thx Dober. IIRC, the 120 Vmax has a FB and outshot the BT in my 7BR custom awhile back. Federali, tell us about your 3.

Absolutely! Although unlike most here I would (and do) use the heavier bullets like the 160 Accubond or 175 Hornadys (H414 is THE heavy bullet powder for the 7-08). The heavier bullets better SD and BC would seem to nominate them but, hey, whatever shoots well in your gun. Try the 175 Hornady or Sierra's at 2600 fps--with a SD of .310 they will do an elk!

On a side note I often see the 7-08 referred to as a young person or female's cartridge--often, not always, with the condescending, patronizing, tacit tone that real men use at least a .300 WM.

You should've seen the expressions on the first elk hunt I went on. I only had my Kimber in 7-08 loaded with 160 Accubonds to use for both elk (cow tag) and deer. My two friends both had .300 Weatherbys and one of the friend's dad had a .30-.378 Weatherby! (I asked him for an empty shell case to use as a canteen) They didn't outright snicker at me but 80% of all communication is non-verbal, right? BTW, with those huge mags they were shooting 165 grainers!?

Anyway, use that 7-08 and show up all the mag guys. It is one of, if not the best all around cartridge for NA non-dangerous game.
