Let us know how she shoots. Nothing shoots easier than a .308, so maybe you'll be okay.

After looking the Model 70s and Brownings over I couldn't figure out why the Model 70 was more popular than the Browning. I have owned four pre-64s and zero Browning Safaris, the Safari sure seemed like a very well made rifle. Why didn't they have the appeal of the Model 70? Maybe they did in other parts of the country, anyone know?

Saltwood. Plain and simple.

Serial number 118961 was manufactured in 1973, so your rifle is 1972 or 1973 manufacture. Probably imported and so marked by Garcia Corp. Lots of small changes when Garcia took over. Sako collectors generally call the 72-73 rifles transitional. The Pre-Garcia rifles have better fit and finish and the stock is somewhat slimmer. Helps the value if "bofors" is stamped on the barrel. I bought one last year that was produced in 1962. The barrel was a copper mine. I doubt that the rifle ever saw anything but Hoppes. Three applications with wipeout and she shoots .75". I would strongly suggest that you try to find some original Finnish made Sako rings on E-bay, but be aware the lows are low. Google up the Sako Collectors club for tons of info on your rifle.

This is the OP again.

This rifle doesn't say "Garcia" of "bofors" on it.

I'll check the rings to see if they are on the same plain. My plan is to put a high X scope on it to see how it shoots. If I keep it, I'll order the Leupold mounts and put a better scope on it. (I'd like something like a Fullfield with the BDC, but that looks like it only comes in matte with that reticule. I'd want gloss to match the rifle. I may just take a 2.5-8 Leupold of another rifle, but that scope is matte also.)

Regarding the comment about the copper fouling; yea, this gun was bad, too. After lots of Sweets, it cleaned up nicely. This gun looks like it had been sitting for a long time. When I was buying it there were actual spider webs in and on it.

Anyway, I'll report back on how it shoots. It may take a few days, though.

Thanks, again. And, you are right, that Sako collector forum has great info on it.

Sorry, it does say "Garcia" on the bottom of the barrel in front of the fore-end.

I bought one a short time ago for about twice what you paid. Mine had the Sako low rings so I put 2-7 Vari-X II on it. It's a nice outfit and shoots quite well. I have a 06' of the same vintage and the 308 is a lot lighter and feels better. You made a good but and the rifle will more than likely be a shooter. Congratulations on a good buy. Ken
