I saw below someone asked about this for a 300 wsm. I am curious as to what I might expect with my 257 and normal use. I know this round is a bit overbore, having said that what is the reality out there in looney land?

i don't know.
but personally, a new barrel is pretty cheap, with all things considered.
shoot it and enjoy it, live hard, die young.....
when accuracy starts to go, get a new barrel put on.
maybe a s.s. fluted of some contour, and make a new love !

No question when this one goes it will get a new barrel. Just curious as to what the concensus is as to life span. I love this round and can't see myself without it in the future. I know after 4-5 rounds it gets HOT. Lotta powder does that I suppose. I have scaled back to 3-4 rounds then cool, even then it is pretty warm. So far accuracy is very good after about 300 rounds or so.

Well I can tell you from experience, at least two thousand rounds. Owned one since 1990 and did a lot of shooting with it and NEVER more than three rounds before letting the barrel cool. It was a .5MOA shooter, and about six months ago the groups started to open up, ending up at around 1.5". Had it rebarreled at Weatherby for 450 bucks and it's back down to .5/.75 range. As best as I can estimate, between 2-2500 rounds. jorge
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

That is longer than I thought it might go. I should only go 3 rounds and cool. Thanks.

A highly variable deal depending on what and how one shoots. Life could be shorter if one pushes light slugs and goes for 4,000+ fps. I only have about 400 rds through mine, and have never had a reason to warm it up.

No jmp...it is WAY overbore. Why don't you get something cheaper to shoot and only use your Weatherby for hunting? If money is no problem, then it really doesn't matter.

Other than the fluted barrel idea, my thoughts exactly.

I've got over a thousand rounds through mine and it is shooting as good as it ever has, under an inch with its favorite loads. The borescope shows about an inch of alligator hide in the throat area, but no drop off in accuracy or velocity. I have never let the barrel get hotter than I could keep my hand on it. When I shoot five-shot groups I usually let it sit eight or ten minutes before I shoot the last two shots, unless the weather is quite cold.

Well it sounds if treated reasonably that 2000 could probably be expected. We shall see?
