I got to load some 8mm mauser ammo
looking for some good loads or info on
m98 mauser with 185 remington bullets.
i have had real good results in 30-06 and
35 whelen with imr 4064 , so i thought i would try that
but never did the mauser before.
so imr 4064 sound good to you 8mm reloaders or what's your pet loads for 185 grain bullet.
thanks kurt

Here are all the 185gr loads on www.loaddata.com.

From Handloader #238

8x57mm Mauser in a Remington M-700

Warning! Notes: A Remington Model 700 Classic with 24-inch barrel, Timney trigger, Gre-Tan Rifles firing pin assembly and 3-9x Burris Fullfield II scope (set at 7x) was used for all testing. Heaviest charges shown are considered maximum for this rifle and should be reduced by about 10 percent to start. Accuracy is for three, three-shot groups at 100 yards from benchrest. Velocities were measured with an Oheler M-35P chronograph with the front screen 12 feet from the rifle's muzzle. Range temperatures were 44 to 69 degrees Fahrenheit. (Handloader Issue #238)

There are around 1000 other loads listed there with other bullet weights.

I use IMR4064/Hornady 195 gr. bullet for hunting with my 700 without complaints. A buddy uses H380/Remington 185 gr. in a 24/47 mauser in CMP vintage matches.

Yes. That load is with the 185 gr bullet. the rifle is a k98 sporter with the original barrel. I would try the 4064, and if u dont get the accuracy you like, Rl 15 is a solid second option as mentioned in the article referenced above. Although I have no problem with my current load of 4064. I have been thinking of trying h414. Maybe starting with a 49 gr charge and working up.

Think of the 8 x 57 as a big 223 case.. actually look at a 223 case. and it looks like a miniature 8 mm Mauser case..

the powders that work well in a 223, will work well in an 8 x 57..

out of the 4 of them I have had, I use a simple formula..
I run SR 4759 ( do the same in the 30/40 Krag)...
I also run 170 grain Speer SMP or Sierra 175 grain SPs..

depending on distance to be shot at..
I go by 5 grain increments..

from 15 thru 20, 25, 30 and 35 grains..

with the above bullets, penetration tests have been amazing regardless of the charge.. especially with the 170 grain Speer.

normally hunting at 30/30 ranges.. I load 25 or 30 grains of SR 4759.. easy on the rifle.. easy on the shooter and more than will get the job done at 250 yds and under..

if you want to redline it... surprisingly the best powders for that with those bullets are IMR 4198, H 4198 and RL 7...3100 fps or more with a 170/175 grain bullets..
