Thinking 7 mag and calling Jim Borden for the build.

Jim is a great guy, enjoyed my dealings with him, and he built several top notch actions for me, no doubt, he will do a good job for you. A 7 RM is a no frills, K.I.S.S. LR round, it will do just fine and for an all out round, not hindered by OAL and plenty capacity to drive the heavier bullets like 162s at top speeds, you will have enough HP for most anything.

The Long Action 700 makes a great 243 Win using the 105 VLD. No need to use the extended mag box.

If the range is kept to 800yds or so this is a deadly deer rifle.

The choice of optic is pretty simple.

264WM with a Shilen 30 inch 1 in 8 inches twist barrel will do the job with very little recoil.

The 140 gr VLD in the 264 is maybe the best combo for anything. To be able to shoot to the level of the 264 at max potential is a very hard thing to do.

The 264 Win Mag is a scary cartridge to live up to.

+100 on calling Borden. He will be my riflesmith till one of us dies or he gets out of the business. Great to deal with and top notch workmanship.

John, please expand upon your comments about the 264wm and vld's. This is the combo I'm using. I couldn't get a factory rifle to shoot well enough so I built a rifle around the 140 VLD.

A 2.800" box will get a SAAMI 243 to 1K exceptionally...........

I just think the 140gr VLD is the best non dangerous big game bullet in the world. Some guys get a little bent when I make a statement like that but I am allowed to have an opinion and other can certainly disagree with me.

Once we settle on the bullet now we just need to figure how fast to drive it and the best case to use to get that velocity.

Somewhere around 3000fps and under 3300fps has proven to be the place to be to get the most reliable results with the VLD design.

My choice of case, right now, is the 264 Win Mag but the 06 case or the 284 case is a great choice.

I do not know what caliber to start the project with. I am kicking around a .284, but open to other bores. Any suggestions, including bullet weight?

I do not mind if the rifle ends up on the heavy side, because it will be used from tower type stands, and not carried around the farm (have other rifles for that).

Pac-Nor barrel (contour ?) and McMillan stock with what scope?

If you have built a beanfield rifle, please tell me what direction you went. I want Karl Feldcamp to do it for me, and VERY willing to wait in line. He has done some work for me in the past, and I he is a great person to communicate with. Thanks.

I went through this a few years ago and the cartridge that seemed to survive the process of elimination was the .264 Winchester Magnum. Lots of velocity, little recoil and the .264 bullet has a fine reputation for bucking wind.

My build veers a little off the campfire playbook as I used a Ruger 77 MKII for the donor. The barrel is a Kreiger #4 stainless 1 in 8" twist. The smith did some minor contour work and fluted the barrel. The rifle wears a super slick Timney trigger and sits in a McMillan stock topped by a S&B 3-12X50 Zenith scope.

It's not much to look at but it's amazaningly accurate and very easy to shoot.

Here is the "beanfield" shooting house. Shots could range from 125yds to over 1000yds. That said, I've never had to shoot over 300yds out of it though, I guess we picked a good spot. It's not really hunting, but it's a great place to waste an afternoon seeing what comes out and what happens after it does.

Picking between the .264WM, 7mmRM, .257, 25-06 and/or 280 is almost important as the color of the rifle.

With that being said, those .264 caliber projectles do offer the best BC bang for the buck.

I'm shooting the 162 A Max out of a 26" 7RM at 3100 fps with Retumbo, not much long distance shooting where I live with 400 being half way around the world.

John, am I understanding your correctly in that you think a 243 is a reasonable deer caliber to 800 yards?
