looking for information on an old Simmon's scope that I acquired recently. I have heard they were high quality and not produced for very many years. It is a 4x44, appears to be a quality product, better than any Simmons I have seen before. has an a/o with sunshade and yellow and gray glass filters. Supposedly sold in the $400 range new.

anyone have any info/experience with these?

T,

Back in the 1980s/1990s when those scope were made, most Simmons scopes were made in Japan. Most likely by Hakko or Light Optical works- the same places that built the Japanese Tascos and Bushnells of the era.

I have owned a few of them over the years. While folks make a big deal about them being "old" quality Japanese optics, I never saw them as being top tier stuff-. Good, but not on the level of a B&L Elite, Leupold etc..The lenses were plenty bright, but optical carity and shaprness was lacking on the ones I had.

The $400 price figure is pretty suspect. I cannot recall ever seeing a Simmons scope- no matter what the vinatge or model -ever priced over $200 brand new in those days.I cannot see a used one being worth more than $150.

The trouble....Simmons is associated with budget optics. Lots of people don't know that Simmons has marketed some very good stuff. That 4x probably didn't sell for anywhere near $400 back then, but the Presidential series was a very good scope. Internals were excellent, better than most any imported scopes. My 6.5-20 Presidential has been on the same rifle since the early 90's......during that time about 10 Leupolds have been gotten rid of.

Not trying to dig up an old thread but I just acquired a rifle that has a 6.5-20 Presidential. If anyone has had this scope, does yours get cloudy at the magnification gets up around 17-20x? Seems to be pretty bright in comparison with my Nikon Monarchs.
