I'm lookin to buy a new Remington 700 Sendero SF II. I would like to get it in .264 win mag, but I've had guys tell me the .264 is a barrel burner and the gun wont last very long. Most say to get the 7mm RUM. I want the .264 , but..??...and as for the 7mm RUM, its just too much for what I want the gun for. (Whitetail and varmints.) Also, lookin to top it with the Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44 BRX. any experience with that scope?

Get the 264, you won't regret it. It isn't any harder on bores than any other overbore cartridge. Main thing is to try and keep the barrel cool. The Swift gets a bad rap for this too, but if a little care is taken they last for thousands of rounds. Doubt you'll wear yours out shooting deer and coyotes. The Swarovski Z5 is a doozy.

the 264WM won't wear out a barrel any faster than a 7mm ultra. Unless you shoot it in competition on a regular basis, the barrel will outlive you.

Get the 264WM my Remington 721 lasted from 1963 to 2009 and I figured after all the abuse it deserved a new barrel. I ran a lot of 100gr Sierra hollow points through it at max loads. Just keep it clean and no extended rapid fire,3-5 shots then let her cool and the 26" barrel will serve you well.

The .264 WM is no harder on barrels than other in it's class - .257 and .270 Wbys, or any of the RUMs or 7 STW (probably less than this one) - lots of voodoo and swamp gas in the .264's criticism as a barrel burner. It's simply a 7mm Rem Mag necked down .020".

i had a Sendero SFII in .264.
upside, it was the most accurate factory rifle i've owned. i diddn't keep round count but while it did go over 1K rounds, i doubt it made 1200 rounds before the barrel puked. but it was accurate.
downside, i hate the new Sendero stocks with the palm swell almost as bad as i hate the XMP trigger. also the 1-9" twist wouldn't shoot anything longer than the 140s. it would not stabilize the 142 SMK.
Guns don't kill people, drivers with cell phones kill people.

That is the original Remington stock and I just like the feel of it and it has been my hunting and shooting friend sense 1963.As long as I can walk it stays.

So let me get this straight, these yahoo's tell you not to get a 264 because its a "barrel burner" but recommend a way-overbore 7mm (RUM) as if it won't burn barrels. Very interesting the logic (or lack of) of some people..... Bill

You sure hit the nail on the head TX270. Even the M60 machine gun will burn barrels and its designed for rapid fire. The 264 has and always will be my first choice.
