Just picked up this 1907 .32 cal pistol that I bought last week. Serial #1032XX (1914?). It's got a spur hammer, although from what I read in Brower's book this gun predates the spur hammer as a standard feature. I ran pictures of the gun past Campfire member cmhjohn when I was thinking of buying the gun, and he said the hammer looks to be heavier than the standard spur hammer that was used on later guns. Have you guys seen any like this before? John suggested that it might be a special order feature. I think I'll see what a letter will tell me. Special order or not, it's a nice old piece and the price was fair. This is my first Savage pistol and I'm tickled with it. Thanks cmhjon for your advice. Rod

According to Baily Brower in his book "SAVAGE PISTOLS"
"All .32 caliber Model 1907's except the last 26,400- the finsal variation, 1907-19 Modification number 2 -- were fitted with a round burr-type cocking lever. The last group was fitted with a thin, spur-type cocking lever. This feature can cause confusion when identifying variations because a heavier spur-style cocking lever was a no-cost option for all Savage pistols starting in May 1914. Nonetheless, it remained a relatively rare feature until becoming stadard in 1919"
It appears you have a very nice special order cocking lever 1907 from 1914.

Brower goes on to say that they are "quite rare" on page 84 of his book in the "Comments" section.
Great grab Rod!!!

Phil, James Carr, in his book Savage Automatic Pistols, has a note saying that beginning in 1914 it was possible to order the .32s with a spur hammer or to have one installed. He goes on to say that the spur hammer did not become standard until 1919. He does not reference a source for that info. Shoot sharp, Mike

Thanks Gene.
Do you guys think that a letter would be worthwhile for this gun?

Phil - Great looking pistol - very nice condition. The heavy spur seems to be rare in the earlier pistols. Could I ask you to check the inspector's mark on the breechbolt? It seems that alot of special order breechbolts carry a stamped ampersand (&) on the side instead of a typical mark. Thanks. Jim

Nice looking pistol. Unfortunately, Savage pistols don't do much for me but I do like to see nice condition in any pistol that old. (Please pardon the heretical nature of my opinion of Savage pistols here on the Savage Collectors board!)
I find the grip angle to be uncomfortable for me, for a quick pointing pocket pistol. Of the three that I owned in my life, none of them had a tolerable trigger pull (an unfair assessment based on such a small sampling, I know). I guess that being a devotee of the Walther PP with it's raked grip angle and very nice trigger clouds my judgment concerning Savage pistols, as I view such things strictly as tools not as a collector.

Jim--
I'm not sure I'm looking in the correct spot, but on the left side of the breechbolt, near the back, there is a stamp. It appears to be a B, or perhaps an 8. I don't see an ampersand.
