A couple years ago there was a really good thread going on the quality of the different makes and models of hand-held compasses. I was trying to locate it, but think the site is limited to 1 year back. Don't suppose anybody saved it??? Phil

Don't have the thread link but recommend the Brunton 54LU: http://www.thecompassstore.com/54lu.html?productid=54lu&channelid=FROOGDoesn't look like Brunton is carrying this any more so get one while you can. Great write up on compasses and navigation at Kifaru by Dick Blust in the essays section.

There are now two major players in the hand held compass market: 1) Sunnto / Recta are one..
2) Silva Sweden who were bought out by Fiskars, and who also own Brunton. Another company owns the name "Silva" in North America, so the original Silva Sweden products are now sold under the Brunton or Nexus brand in the US and Canada..The changes came about in the mid 90's I believe..
Not sure who makes the "Silva" compasses sold in Northern America and Canada these days, but they are no longer made by Silva Sweden..

Otto is my co-pilot.
