Just bought a used Marlin 1895 45/70 and plan on taking it out Sunday and try my luck at a pig.I don't reload for this caliber yet and the local gun store only have Remington 300 gr hollow point and Winchester Supreme ballistic silvertip 300 gr. ammo.I was thinking about buying the Winchester supreme ammo but was wondering how this bullet would hold up against a pig. Or would you use the Remington ammo. Thanks to all.

The Rem. 300 JHP is a hammer.

Of course, so is just about everything out of a .45-70.

whichever is most accurate in your gun. Either will put a full smackdown on a pig.

I think either would work fine, here is a link about loading the NBT's and a couple of pics of dead critters:

You will be hard pressed to keep any .45 caliber bullet in a pig, unless it is a HUGE boar and the bullet hits the shoulder/shield. I have seen some shields nearly three inches thick and hard as a diesel truck mud flap. Great caliber! I shoot one in .44 mag and .444 marlin. Pigs are no match for either. Haven't recovered a bullet yet. I shoot the Remington 240 grain HP's and Soft points. They still go all the way through with considerable damage. Flinch

Either will work but I'd buy the cheaper one and save the brass for reloading.. Good luck with the hunt!
