Got back Tuesday from our hunt at Chapparel WMA in South Texas.

Just now getting a chance to post pics and story.

The "Chap" is a really neat place, 15,200 acres owned and managed by TPWD. We had putting in for the draw on this hunt for 18 yrs and finally got drawn.

After checking in Friday (17th) and picking our pasture, we set out hunting.

One buddy missed a 150 class ten point Friday afternoon. My other buddy and I saw some decent deer, but hunting was kind of tough with the full moon and crazy temp swings.

Still saw lots of bucks however, I passed a 130 class ten point on Sunday. I figured he was 3.5 yrs old and they prefer only bucks 5.5 on up be taken.

On the last full day of hunting (Monday), I decided to check out a fencline sendero not far from the sendero I had been hunting as the deer always seemed to be coming from/going that direction.

The fencline sendero had lots of sign in it. We found a water seep about half way down the sendero with lots of traffic going to it.

So at noon we moved my tipod within 225 yds of the seep, butted up in a mesquite where I could see 350 yds or so in each direction.

Got in my tripod about three o'clock. Watched a nice, young ten pt. work a couple does by the seep. Had a pair of yotes' trot by. Later some does showed up in the other direction and fed in the sendero.

At a few minutes till six o'clock I looked back toward the seep and this was feeding in the middle of the road......

One shot from my 300 WM Model 70 through the shoulders, he side-stumbled about 10 ft. and fell on the side of the two track, 225 yds.

My best whitetail ever, scored 146 B&C as a straight 9-pt., 155 lbs. field dressed, 5.5 yrs old.

The 18 yrs was worth the wait!

Bill

Congratulations on a great hunt and a awesome buck! That's definitely one of the nicer ones to come off the Chapparral. On my hunt I was really surprised how many of the shots were over 200 yards which seemed impossible with all the thick brush. Did they allow you to use bait?

I'll bet they'll have a photo with you and your deer on display for quite a while at Chaparral, and they should.

Congrats cool

Good deer. Looks like he's been raising hell with the trees/bushes in that country.
