Stuff gets tense and you do what you gotta do. Rather get shot myself than feel a cat scatter my guts in 5 directions. Not an altogether unique assessment so far as I can determine and as a case in point:

1970, just east of the A Shau Valley a Marine recon team in hard contact called for air support. We arrived and he popped a smoke, lots of small arms fire in the background when he talked on the radio..he says "Shoot my smoke". The Cobras did that.

We picked him up about 20 minutes later. He was the sole survivor of a 6 man team and there were dinks stacked up around their hilltop perimeter like cord wood. Piece of shrapnel had deflected off the radio and nicked his pecker, adding insult to a couple of bullet holes elsewhere. Lad was smilin' though all the blood however...

You do what you have to do, maybe you get the bear, maybe he gets you. Life doesn't come with guarantees...

A well-known gunwriter I've had the good fortune to call my friend for the past ten years is regularly vilified, insulted, and lied about on the internet on a regular basis. He is an intelligent and perceptive observer, a careful researcher of facts, and a very good writer. Yet there are shooters, hunters, and "tactical people" I know, many of them honorable and admirable men, who absolutely hate this gunwriter.

My friend accepts this with good grace. His view is that anyone who raises himself up as a writer or TV journalist or whatnot will immediately become an object of envy. Envy's siamese twin is hatred. The more successful or famous a sporting journalist becomes, the more detractors and enemies he attracts. It was true for Elmer Keith, Bill Jordan, Jack O'Connor, and Jim Carmichael, among many others. The haters won't confine their attacks to any factual basis; lies, distortions, and oft-repeated unsubstantiated rumors are as good as the truth, especially on the internet.

Hell, I've published only a handful of articles, and I've come across internet ninjas saying things about my writings and me personally that are so far from the truth that they're laughable.

I can only imagine what Craig Boddington and his family go through on a regular basis, but I can guess well enough. Several people posted items on this thread that, if spoken aloud in the company of civilized and honorable men, would earn them expulsion from the group and quite possibly a good beating.

The young woman in question had an unfortunate hunting incident. Happily, no human lives were lost, and no one was seriously injured. Given the rapid unfolding of the leopard attack and the hunters' urgent response, I can't see any reason to criticize her actions, and certainly none whatever to attempt to cast aspersions on her character for having done some modelling.

But some people, like Shootermacruber, appear to be too stupid, boorish, ill-bred, and small-minded to grasp such concepts. I love the internet, and I love the 'Fire, but it grieves me to see such petty people having the right to behave in such a manner without fear of social approbation or perhaps having their teeth knocked down their throats, which is certainly what would have happened if the post in question had been spoken aloud in the personal presence of Mr. Boddington or any number of his friends who are regulars here at the 'Fire.
