Hi, who has / had one. Did you love it or hate it? Do you still have it? Gave my tried and trued 270 to my son so I'm debating between a 270 Wby Magnum and a 300 Wby Magnum. If I don't buy a rifle this year I'll have to hunt elk with my 500 Jeffery again and it does make a bit of a mess.

Regards,

Chuck

After years of being tempted I built one on a pre 64 M70 action, Lilja barrel, 25" IIRC,and Bansner stock.

It was a great rifle and cartridge, very accurate so long as I stayed away from Swift S'cos which threw fliers.Velocities variously ran 3300+ with 130's.

I sold it because I could not see that it did anything that a handloaded 7RM did not do with the same range of bullets;plus I already had 270 Win and 7RM rifles so the 270 Roy seemed superfluous.

I sold it to a pal who still has it and will sell it back but I likely won't buy it because I have mag 7's and can't see a 270 on a magnum case when you can have a 7mm.

Wifey's Mark V Deluxe rebarreled and accurized by Hill Country Rifles shoots 140-grain Barnes X factory (and my TSX handload) MOA as advertised. Loves it, has it, deer, waterbuck, gemsbok and maybe next a zebra with Nosler Partition 160's (also accurate).

Had an Accumark in 270 wby several yrs ago. fast, flat, fun. As Bob said earlier though, not a big jump above the 270 win or 7 rem mag.

Between the two.....I'd go with the 300. Then get a sharp knife, freezer paper, frying pan, garlic, etc grin

I love the 270 Weatherby. Flat shooting and hard hitting. And I like Mark V's. Back in the 90's Weatherby came out with the ClassicMark and the WeatherMark. Those are the Mark V's that really appeal to me. And their factory ammo. is good stuff. So far I've only killed whitetail's with it, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it on larger game if the opportunity presented itself.

I have one in a Mark V, it does push the 130's fast, but at the end of the day, it does not seem to do anything a 7 rem mag won't-as far a shooting game. The Weatherby action on Mark V's is really heavy, and the 26" barrel makes this rifle, and a .257 wthby I had seem like logs. Weatherby's factory ammo always reaches or excedes published velocities in my rifles.

Redneck is currently screwing a PacNor barrel onto a Winchester 70 Classic Stainless action in the 270 Roy.

Haven't decided if I'll keep it or send it down the road as Bob and mark talked me into a Mashburn.

I have been playing with a couple 270 weatherbys for a little less than a year and really like the caliber. Mine are both mark V's. One an Accumark and the other a Sporter. The Accumark is a tack driver and the Sporter is plenty good enough to hunt with(1" to 1.25"). My go to load is about 71 or 72 gr of RL-22 and the 130 TSX. I believe that I will always have of these around. They are that good. I would willing to part with the Mark V sporter if you might like to play too. Daryl.

I've shot two Mark Vs in 270 Wby and both were accurate with factory Wby ammo. I chronoed some factory 150SPs in a friends and got an avg of 3265fps and a group of .75" at 200yds. I was able to duplicate those loads with R22. Great cart for sure.

It's a tough cartridge to get into with the 7 mag around.

While I'm a big 7RM fan, the extra 125fps and better BCs of 150s in the 270Wby are a slight advantage. For 160s, the 7 is the way to go.

Have two 270 Wby's. First is a 98 Mauser in a Bansner stock, second is a Mark V I bought because I like the first so much.

I owned and hunted with a Vanguard VGX in .270 Roy for over 20 years. It was the single finest hunting rifle I've ever owned. Unbelievably accurate, super flat and devastating on game, I took a truckload of deer, hogs and elk with that rifle...around 24 game animals if I remember correctly, with only one bullet ever recovered.

That bullet was on a 5pt bull elk hit at 200 yards on a very slight quartering (almost dead-on chest shot) angle where the bullet entered just in front of the right shoulder and came to rest against the hide near the end of the opposite ham...nearly five feet of penetration from the 150gr Partition.

Not only does the round shoot flat and is rather mild in terms of recoil, it seems to have an effect on game that is noticeable...they just drop like rocks when hit with it. Two in particular come to mind: One 5pt bull at 175 yards was quartering toward me and the bullet took out the front shoulder, pretty much destroying it, went through the chest cavity, mincing the lungs and left a quarter-size exit wound between two ribs on the other side. The impressive thing was that bright red lung cheese was strewn literally 35' beyond the dead elk's body....the bullet went through so fast and it took lots of stuff with it! The second was another 5pt bull at 225 yards that was broadside. The high shoulder shot literally flipped the bull ... no lie ... and he landed right in the last four tracks he ever made, flat on his back.

Easy on the shoulder. Devastating on game. Hold on hair out to 400 yards. Superbly accurate. Sexy as any cartridge has ever been.

What's not to love?

I just sold a 270 Mark V Ultralight that I had for about 8 months. I loved the gun, but when it came to hunting I have a hard time getting away from my first rifle (coincidentally a 7mag).

I may get on in the future, pushing 130s at 3,400 was fun, I would have loved to stretch it out to 400yds or so instead of benching it at the range.

The first hunting rifle my Dad bought me was in 270WBY. The old man knew what he was doing. smile I have killed everything from Antelope to Buffalo with that gun well over 60 kills. The Buffalo was a free range criter that dropped with one well placed shot from 175yds. I still carry it today and really enjoy it.

I currently own 2, both mark V's. Both accurate high velocity lead slingers. Agree with others about the low recoil compared to effect on game. Only downside is the Mark V is no lightweight and walking up PNW ridges all day w/ a heavy gun gets old.

I currently own a Mark V Deluxe in the 270 Wby Mag. I absolutley love the gun and the cartridge. Always wanted a Deluxe chambered for a Wby round.

Anyway, I poured over ballistics tables for more time than I care to say, in search of the best "do it all" round(for me).
I hunt mostly in Texas, but wanted a cartridge I could use for the ocassional trip out west. In the end, the 270 Wby Mag was the obvious choice. 100 Gr pills for varmits, all the way to 160's for the bigger N. American game. What sold it for me was the fact it shoots darn near as flat as the 257 Wby, but can also hold it's own against the 300 Wby. All while nudging you about like a 30-06.

The 300 Wby is an awesome round, but more gun than I need 90% of the time. It's the versatility thing that sold me. I think the 270 is more at home shooting Elk than the 300 is shooting coyotes and hogs. With that said,if I lived in Colorado, I might have given the 300 a closer look.
