I have the .270WBY in a very pretty Ruger #1. It is one great long range deer stand rifle. I have the .300 in a wooden Vanguard. It would probably be more apt to make an Elk trip. For backup/bad weather I have a SS/Syn Howa in 7mmWSM. They will all shoot factory loads from 3/4" to 1 1/4".

I am a big fan of the .300WBY as a one rifle pick. If AK/Africa is not in your near future, the .270 will do anything that a .300 will.

If my 340 B was Ross Seyfried 's fault my 270 B was Bob Hagel's. It was built by the late Dave Gentry on a 700 action. It was never very accurate; that is < MOA, probably because of the long throat that I didn't specify but I believe was due to poor communication back and forth regarding that detail. Otherwise it was a masterly work. That said, it killed a bunch of whitetails, a couple at about 500 yds.

While what Bob said Above is very true, a 160-gr Nos at 3050-3100 fps or a 150-gr Nos at 3200 fps can handle most contingencies. The 130s buzz even faster of course. I got rid of mine before the very good "mono-bullets" were available. I think it is a much over-looked cartridge if not an under-rated one.

Why settle for a short, fat, frumpy cartridge that looks like Roseann Barr when you can have a long, lean, sexy one that looks like Gwyneth Paltrow? grin

Seattlesetter, Well said short and dumpy vs long and slinky. Easy choice.

Had one put together last year. Do not have a 7 mag. So far have not had a lot of time to load for it, but RL 22 and 150 Sierra's have been very accurate and accounted for my best buck to date in 40 years of deer hunting. Pretty happy with it thus far!

270 WSM = Rachael Ray
270 Wby Mag = Martha Stewart

I've had 3 .270 Weatherbys, all very accurate, and the one I have now is a Mark V Sporter (made the USA last year) that started shooting 130's into 1/2" or so during it's very first range session.

I got my first .270 Wby. because of the 3400+ velocities it could get with 130-grain bullets. Thus it seemed like a round that would match the 7mm STW without as much recoil--and it did. With accurate monometal bullets it works fine on about any non-dangerous game; mine likes 130 Nosler E-Tips.

The .270 Winchester is a great cartridge. I've killed a pile of animals with it as well, and have owned maybe 10, including a very accurate Remington right now.

I've also take a lot of big game up to bull nilgai with the .270 WSM. It works fine as well, but I never could tell any vast difference between it and the standard .270 in the field, though there was a little difference on the chronograph. But there is a noticeable difference between the standard .270 and the .270 Weatherby in the field.

With 150-160 grain bullets the .270 Weatherby will duplicate (though not exeed) the 7mm Remington Magnum. But that's not what I got mine for. Instead it's a ray-gun for 130-grain bullets.

It may be the perfect all-around cartridge for North American big game, excluding big bears. Fast, flat and hard hitting, what's not to like. I just started reloading and have found that my MKV really likes the 140 AB's, it shoots them about 3200+ fps. Weighing in at a little more that my new born child, it can be a pain to carry through the woods. But that's why we have more than one rifle.

Don't own one yet, but I need something to fill that void between the 6.5 and 7 mm.

My Mark V Sporter in 270 Wthby did not like the 130 gr bullets I tried in it... When I used some 150 gr HORN sp's and a full dose of IMR 7828 it would group 3 under a quarter coin bout everytime.Shot 3 of my biggest whtl bucks with it.Other than being heavy it's a great outfit. Magnum Man

For the last ten years I've had both the 270 WBY Ultra Lightweight Mark V and a 300 WBY Euromark Mark V.. I just sold the 300 because I have a 338 Win Mag. I loved both my Weatherby's but the 270 was more suited now for my needs. I had it accurized by Hill Country Rifle and get great groups with the WBY factory ammo.

Colorado,

I'm having Richie Reiley at Hi Tech Customs here in town build me one right now. Check him out on Cascade north of Fillmore.

I also have a .300 and .340 and both, esp the .300, have been my go-to rifles so I'm not sure really why I'm getting the .270. Maybe for mule deer, antelope, sheep if I ever draw a tag....

But justifying getting another rifle on this web site really isn't the point...

I own one in a Mk V Delx that I love. Like others have said, it hits game like a bolt of lightning. I have taken whitetail, mulies, and elk with mine. Everyone I have shot with good I have had good placement and they all fell where they were shot. It is my go to gun.

I had one in a R93. 74gns of H4831 with 150gn TSX = extremely fast & accurate!
A buddy bought that barrel & ended up with 130gr TSX at 3530+fps(chron'd), without any signs of pressure.
Yup, it's a hard hitting flat shootin SOB!
