Been chasing light rifles for 30 years and have decided that something very close to 7 lbs including scope and mounts is about perfect for me. I can live with an 8 lb rifle all up, but unless we are talking about big bore magnum rounds don't see any reason to have anything over 8 anymore.
I have a Kimber that is closer to 6 lbs than 7. It is a great rifle. Mine is a good shooter and I have never had any trouble with it. But I just shoot from field positions a little better with my 7 lb rifles. Incidentally I don't shoot anything over 8 lbs any better.
Off the shelf I like the Kimber or Tikka.
If someone already had a rifle they liked and it shot well I'd just put it in a truly lightweight stock and put a lightweight scope on it in Talley or DNZ mounts.
I have several Remingtons and Winchesters that weigh between 7.25 and 7.5 in McMillan Edge or Brown Precision stocks, Leupold scopes and Talley lightweight mounts.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

Less than 7lbs gets harder to shoot well, for me, in the field. I have a few rifles that are 7 to 7 1/2 lbs that suit me well for hunting. Mostly seem to run mcmillans and bansners, leupolds, and remingtons/winchester long actions. Spent a bunch of money and time chasing the "perfect" setup and have decided close is good enough.

Sucks s/a, MR contour barrel @22" give or take, tlw's and 1" 3.5-10x40 or 6x42, bolt it into an TI takeoff or McMillan MR handle, edge or swirly whichever floats your boat and budget.

Here's the long action version of Steelhead's rifle: M700 .30-06 Factory Mtn Rifle tube McM Hunter's Edge The scope is wearing BC flip ups. You can save almost an ounce by getting rid of those and get the weight down to 7lbs 3.4 oz or so. Here's a shot of it with this year's elk:

If I were looking for an economical lightweight I'd look no further than this: http://24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/4959042/1Not mine, but have one like it (see below). Comes in under 6.5 lbs. scoped with LWs and 2-7 Leupy.

Gets pretty tough to beat a Rem 700 MR slapped in a Brown synthetic or Pound'r for lightweight.I gave one to a friend in 1983 or thereabouts.....have not seen much lighter, except a ti or Kimber.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Field and stream had an "idea" article on building your own using an old Mauser action with a list of manufacturers to go to on parts and what-not. All up for around $300-$400 depending on you, of course sky's the limit also. Wish I'd had kept that article now to send you. All kinds of stuff on internet about doing that though.

I've been playing with sticking husqvarna barreled actions in light synthetic. All rifle parts pre bedding and paint are at 5.5 on the latest in a Brown. Should be 6.5 or therabouts with 6x36 in Talley ultralights. I'm well under 700 bucks on the current one and only that much because I sprung for a vintage timney.

Don't have a recipe for a rifle under 6 lbs. Just like I don't have a recipe for boiling dog schit. Because they is both nasty.

Just held a kimber montana in .308 at the local shop. He recently took it in, and i cannot find any sign of it even being fired. Had scope (Nikon, nice one) but seemed like a great deal. I think it was $950 asking price. Nicest trigger I have seen on a production gun......
if anyone interested, drop me a pm and I can tell you where it is. Just cleared up the scope brand. these can be found at good prices. Net of the scope, it puts this gun at under $800

I was gonna recommend the same thing but you beat me to it! The rifle alone weighs 5 lbs 10 ounces. Add 2 oz for Talley lightweights and 9 ounces for a Leupy 4X and you're looking at 6 lbs 5 oz all up, for $599 delivered to the dealer of your choice by a uniformed official of the government of the United States of America. 'Course, I do have a fiduciary interest in the recommendation...
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!
