I am looking at a remington 700 classic at my local gun shop.
The stock on the gun has the usual handling marks on it and the bluing seems to be in good shape until one takes the gun out of the stock. When you take the gun out of the stock there is a 4 inch by .3 inch strip on each side of the barrel that is pretty rusty. Also there is one bit of rust that is about the size of a pencil lead tip on the action that looks like it could leave a pit if a person sand blasted it out. The bore and crown on the gun looks really nice in my opinion. In addition the gun also comes with redfield bases and a 3-9 vintage redfield scope of unknown quality. So all in all the gun looks like it was hunted with alot but shot little. The owner took the time to clean the bore and the exposed metal on the outside but neglected to take it out of the stock to clean it. The gun shop has it marked 479 but the salesman told me they would take 429 for it.
1.So what do you guys think that it is worth? 2.Does that little bit of rust on the action really mean anything?

Fret the bore,as the rest is moot................

A 700 Classic unless it is in a rare (low production) caliber and NIB with papers etc, is just another 700. For $400, if bore is excellent and function is fine is a good deal. Sell the scope, stock and mounts. Stick it in a new Remington Synthetic stock, get it Cerracoated, throw a decent scope on it and you'll have a solid hunting rifle. OR, you can sell all the parts but the action top metal and barrel and build something something crazy like this:

I sorta like the classic stock. I was thinking about getting it bedded, floated, and squared and reamed out to 7mm mashburn specs.

I think that classic bottom metal is the same as bdl bottom metal, correct? So any stock that would work a bdl would work for a classic?

A Classic is just a 700 SA or LA with a different stock and made in one caliber/year during their run.
Sad to say, Remington did not use fancy English or Turkish Walnut on them so most are quite plain.
You can improve it, if you dip it in some camo liquid fiberglass ....... LAFFIN !
