Has anyone used the Hornady 60 grain V-Max on coyotes, bobcat, or cougar? Just wondering what your results were with it.

can tell ya that they knock the coyotes and cats azz's into the dirt.

super accurate in my ar's, and have plenty of energy to anchor the above, and have shot deer with them as well.

great bullets.

shot one in the neck, and broke neck with an exit.
pretty gory, to say the least.

another sideways thru the chest and exited.

mush inside.

I've shot a boatload of 55's and 60's. They explode the insides of yotes and cats. Deer too. They really slosh up the insides of em broadside.
And if your 223 won't shoot a 55 or 60 vmax it won't shoot.
You're not gonna save a hide on a yote under 200 yds unless friontal shot. Even on those they are so sloshed up inside they are nasty to clean. I have shot cats, skunks, coons, squirrels, possums completely in half with em.
If anyone ever wants to try a box in their rifle the black hills red box shoots scary accurate in every 223 I've had and the brass is good as well.

That has not been my experience with the 60gr V-Max, dont get me wrong I love this bullet. It is fantastic for prairie dogs, rockchucks and coyotes but I would never use this bullet on big game.
I only use this bullet in my 223's and have only shot 350 out of the original 500 that I purchased (lot#03-673). they dont penetrate more than 1/2" before they come un-done. I have only shot about a dozen coyotes with them and they have all been surface blow-up's with maximum carnage, I even have a video of trying to shoot at a long range rockchuck in the prone position, I did not have a completely clear shot but pulled the trigger anyway, the 60gr V-Max blew-up going through tall grass.
I would have to witness an exit to ever believe it is possible unless the 60gr V-Max is launched sub-sonic.

Oh they will exit coyotes! Our yotes here average under 35 lbs. but I'v had not the same experience as rockchuck.
I've only had one that splashed and it was on a hog that was over 400 lbs that hit the point of his shoulder.
Shot at him 9 times and I think I had 8 hits. All went inside him, none came out, but one did shatter his lower leg bone which was as thick as my forearm. They went through his hide easy, broadside and quartering. I know they go through deer heads from back to front pretty easy too.

GLENNGTR- i have shot a lot of coyotes with a 60 vmax and 60 grain berger. very good. i have not shot any with a 60 balistic tip or a 60 partition ( the partition is what i would use for deer) . i shoot a couple of h&k 630s. 12 twist.

No experience with the .223 but we've shot several with a moderate load from .22-250's on coyotes. Entrance hole and no exit at calling ranges. It's the only bullet I've shot coyotes with from a .22-250 that didn't tear holes in them. Palmettos experience is interesting. Maybe lower velocity so they aren't fragmenting??? Here's an article on Fur Loads I wrote that just published for LR Hunting on-line magazine. Might be of interest to some.

63g Sierra is the cat's meow on deer, they will stabalize in a 14 twist.

55g Hornady is the toughest 55g on the market and extremely accurate with only .003 length in variation in ogive lengths over a huge lot.

The 12" twist or faster is better for the 60g Partitions, and boy do they do some damage!

The 55 hornady sp will do nasty stuff to deer. way tougher than the vmax. Wish I had a pic of the exit on the last doe i shot with one.
Small doe, but I pulled what was left of the heart out through the hole. Hit her at 80 yards right in the top of the heart.
The 60's are tough as they come in a 60 but I can never get em tot shoot in anything. The 63 sierra smp shoots in every 22 cal I've tried. 14 twist and faster.

I've shot two coyotes with the 60 VM and it was, um, overkill. Like tossing a shaped charge. I don't think I'd use it on a deer, I'd want something far less explosive.

The 60VM is my go to load for my AR. Haven't had any spinners or runners with them. Killed a good sized doe with them also, but there are better bullets in a 22cal for that. A couple thousand on hand never hurts.

I use the 60 gr V-Max with with Varget in one of my AR's but haven't as of today shot a coyote with it. In the AR i used yesterday while calling , i use the Sierra 69 gr BTHP with Ramshot Tac.

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

It is a great coyote bullet.

I have dropped a few with it and like others, have had them bang-flop. Not a single runner.

My only negative issue is loading them, I do not care for fiddling with flat based bullets in my Dillon. I have always found boat tail projectiles easier to load with. A minor complaint really.

BTW, was running them in an 8 twist AR.

No Coyote experience with them but I shot 2 reds with the 60s this winter. My advise is if you want to save the fur don't use them. At least not on fox.

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

The 60 gr. V-Max is super accurate from my Colt 6724 varmint AR15, and I run them over 26 grs. 748 for 3080 ft/sec. I agree that they make a mess, and I wouldn't use them on deer. There are better bullets for that such as the 60 gr. Partition or some of the Barnes offerings.
