.... Ruger has dropped the .300 RM -- and the .30-06 -- from its #1 offerings in its current catalogue but still offers some .300 H&Hs... How so? Look at their current webage for the No 1-A chamberings- http://www.ruger.com/products/no1LightSporter/models.htmlThe .300RCM and 30-06 are still listed.

You afe right. Sorry about missing the 1A in 30-06. The B standard rifle tho is gone from the catalogue in toto. The shorter, lighter, barreled 300 RCM 1A IMO is no match for the .300 WM or .300 H&H in the 1s model.

I've never owned a 300 H&H but I sure dreamed about it growing up reading the old gun books and magazines. I don't think anybody who hunts with one needs to justify their choice. It's history in the field speaks for itself.
...and yes I also think it's quite a sexy looking cartidge.

For a long time the nicest thing about the .300 H&H was that you could easily convert a cheap Remington 721 or equivalent to a .300 Weatherby with just a reamer. Velocity gains were impressive, though largely due to the H&H being loaded to much lower pressures. Much cheaper than buying a rifle from Weatherby.
Regarding the poster who posted that the .300H&H won the 1000 yard Wimbledon championship in the '30s, the .300 H&H was the cartridge of choice from then until at least 1960. Eventually the good shooters started using the .30-338 and then the .300 Winchester, though many stuck with the .30-338 or even the .300 H&H because of the short neck on the Winchester. Eventually, when good match bullets became available, the 6.5-284 became the cartridge of choice.
For some reason nobody seemed to use a .300 Weatherby in the Wimbledon, though I once saw a 6.5-300 Wby used.
Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

One bit of trivia is that when the .300 H&H was used to win the Wimbledon for the first time by Ben Comfort, the score was actually a tie with a shooter using a .30-06. But Comfort came out on top with the tie-breaking scoring system then used.
Nevertheless, that win gave the H&H plenty of publicity.
