Yep...I will take it if BobinNH doesn't grin

Pre-64s demand higher prices in Texas than normal for all calibers ...just supply and demand.. smile..plus I believe they are referred to as "The rifleman's rifle"... cool

Love the looks of that rifle. What kind of stock is that? It looks like my NH model 70 30-06 that I just put into a factory synthetic I bought from CFVA.

No it is one of the original McMillians that fit the pre-64 Winchester Model 70s..if I remember right they were marketed in featherweight, standard and the 375...I got all three..the FW on my 270, standard on the '06 and also fits my 264, 300 H&H and 338..the 375 had to be slightly modified .. wink

Just paid $1100 for the same rifle, 1951 vintage and I am tickled to death. I wanted to replace my model 70, 270, 1949 vintage that was possessed by demons. I looked everywhere for the $900 30/06's and all I could find were the ones that had been refinished and/or had a recoil pad installed.

I eventually decided that a $900 pre-64 30/06 in pristine shape was a myth and got off my wallet. I am happy as a puppy with two peters with mine.

Your going to love that rifle. Hope yours gets some use, as mine sits in the safe during hunting seasons (I know it is a damn shame). I shoot mine a lot when I go to the range and it is the smoothest most (one of anyway grin) accurate rifles I own. I'd like to take mine out during deer season this year, but the old sporterized m1917 always gets drug out in the field grin. Use and abuse the cheap gun I always say blush. I think everyone should own a rifle like yours, it is the "rifleman's rifle" you know. Mine is also a 1951 model.

I have had two 270's (one great, the other was the one possessed by demons), two 30/06's (both fantastic shooters) and one 308. They all got away somehow...this one will stay with me, unless it is a poor shooter, etc. I suspect it will be just fine though.

The bad 270 had a history of losing deer every time I shot one....damnedest thing I ever saw....one nice 8 pointer took 4 shots to the heart/lung area and still had to be finished off with my 45....another huge 6 pointer was lost and found later (ribs destroyed in the lung area)...it put me in the hospital with blood poisoning, another deer traveling 341 yards (per GPS) shot through the lungs....it was crazy. Another poster on this thread knows about my troubles with that gun. Should have just made a safe queen with her, but someone wanted her real bad.

Can't wait to shoot the new 30/06

Paid $1200 for this one. Sometimes I wonder why I mess around with having other rifles made or screwed together.

Just looked at the above thread and realized I had my .308Ws mixed up.

This is the group shoot with the Pre64 pictured:
