What are your experiences with this rifle, both good and bad? I don't have a Model 70, but am thinking one of these in 30-06 would be a good "base piece" for the firing battery.

I bought one in 270. Solid sub MOA rifle with about anything its fed. I like the old trigger better but the MOA trigger isn't bad. Solid rifles, no worries.

Not so sure it is anything more than a standard blue featherweight in a Grade II stock with the decorated bottom metal. I think a stainless featherweight would look good in a Grade II stock.

My son has a Remington Model 700 CDL in 30-06 and talks a lot of smack about it. I figure if I show up with a Model 70 in 30-06 I can rock him back on his heels abit... smile

Younguns need an occaisonal whippin' to keep them in line grin

No downside to that 2008 M70.....just pimped out a bit,and a SS model is nice, too.

Pay no attention to those distracting infidels touting the 7mm's...... smile

I have one in .270 WSM that I am currently breaking in. I know it is early in the game but at this point the rifle looks to be a real stud. I put a Leupold 4.5x14 on it and the combination is working very well. Oh yea, it is a beautiful gun too!

So, in these new guns, did Winchester solve the "pierced primer hot gasses blowing back into your eyeballs" shortcoming of the pre-64 Model 70s?

I'd love to have a 2008 grade II, but have a newer fwt 308 that is becoming one of my favorite rifles. They fixed the gas blowback problem on the model 70's a long time ago and most guys don't even consider that a problem to worry about in the pre-64 (go figure?). I'd like to see the look on your sons face when you outshoot him with that new model 70 laugh. They are great rifles and very well made. I don't even mind the moa trigger either, but do prefer the old style trigger better because of the simplicity and ruggedness of it.
