Flat bolt .220 Swift's are tack driving machines. You won't regret it & pay no attention to the naysayers.

Swampy, just for S&G, did you try one of the Remington Spartans. Excellent piece of excrement ahem, equipment from Big Green....and Igor

I had a sample of one tang safety Ruger. It was purchased used in Twin Falls, Id in 1982 with a 4-12X40 Bushnell Banner mounted. That is all I know of the rifle's history, but its performance was spectacular. Not only did the rifle produce tiny little groups from field positions, but it reliably printed to the same point of impact through the seasons and with several different load combinations.
It was equipped with a 26 inch magnum contour barrel as I remember, and either the trigger had been tuned by a master gunsmith or was a custom trigger. I do not know which as I had to sell the rifle in 1984.
It is the one rifle I REALLY regret selling. I know who still has it and someday I hope to convince him to let me buy it back.

I have several tang-safe 77s and have had several others. They work fine, but I much prefer the MkII. The tang-safe units are pushfeed, and the large Mauser-style extractor requires a bit of force to snap over the rim of the case, which happens on the turn-down phase of bolt cycling. You can feel the handle stop midway down, then buildup downward force with your hand until it finally goes the rest of the way down with a SNAP! The CRF MkII is MUCH smoother feeding and the bolt handle does not hesitate at all when closing.
Another thing I don't particularly like about the tang-safe models is how easy it is to inadvertently bump the safety to FIRE during normal carrying, particularly when wearing gloves. Many times I have looked down and found the safety in the FIRE position. The safety on the MkII is far enough out of the way to avoid that. Also, you can switch the MkII safety on and off when the bolt is open. I like that freedom.
That said, I am not ready to trade my tang-safety models away anytime soon.
Our God reigns. Harrumph!!! I often use quick reply. My posts are not directed toward any specific person unless I mention them by name.

K,
Did you ever examine the bolt face on that rifle? My tang Ruger has likewise blown several primers out at the edge and has sprayed me in the face and eye with hot gas and metal. The problem with my rifle is a pore on the bolt face near the firing pin hole. I'm debating what to do with this rifle.
