Looking at an older stainless, synthetic 700 in 270 with a blind magazine (adl style). Is there any specific markings that makes something a "mountain rifle" model??

RatherB-

Remington's first foray into the area of stainless rifles was in 1993. They made them in .25/06, .270, .280, and .30-06 (As well as 7mm rem Mag, and .300 win) The standard calibers were Mtn Rifle contour barrels. Stocks appear to be Lee Six. At least I have a Lee Six stock and it appears identical to my SS/Syn, Mtn rifle stock...

They were made only one year, then in 1994 they became BDL's with standard barrel contours... HTH-

You can tell it's a Mountain Rifle when you carry it all day then swap guns with your buddies BDL 7 Mag and he says, "Holy [bleep] this is light."

Swampy are you in PC?

There is no accounting for taste.

Experience is a great thing as long as one survives it.

Generally, there ain't a lot that separates the two however,
Barely making it is a whole lot more satisfying than barely not making it.

Guyz...I keep tellin' you...we can use Swampy as a contra-indicator...

If he says its a BDL...its not..

If he says its a Mt. rifle...its not

If he says its not accurate...it is..

and so forth..

^this. I have one from '93 and the people at Remington weren't much help with the serial number when i got it used, at least the guy I talked to wasn't, tried to tell me it was a BDL serial number. Check the barrel stamp to determine the year of manufacture and then just measure the barrel dimensions if you can.

Hope it works out. Mine appeared to be a safe queen when I got it last year and is still pretty much stock and shoots like a house a fire.

Went to a gun show... 20 miles from the Remington Hqrs. At the Remington exhibit, I asked the same question. 3 people with green shirts, and Rem. logo, could not answer... Finally a woman came out from behind the green Rem. curtin "Mountains are BDL's".. Maybe they were just trying to confuse.

I have been to a few different shows where Remington People show up. Hopefully they are not anyone in engineering because they are dumber then Swampy.

Did it ever occur to you that perhaps one of those "Green Shirts" actually is Swampy? (God forbid...) smile

The only thing I can add is that they have the inletted target type crown, or at least that's what I call it. I ordered mine as soon as they came out in 1992 because, 1) I wanted a stainless all weather rifle and 2) I wanted a 280. I killed my first deer with it on Jan 8, 1993, and have killed a bunch more with it since. If it helps you at all, the SN on mine is S6219XXX.

1 of the old stainless ADL Mountain rifles I have, had MTR or Mountain Rifle , something like that imprinted on the inside of the tupperware stock. Barrel contour is easy to tell the difference.

What is the going price on one of these as I have one in 30/06?
Only thing is that mine has a recoil reducer on it. I found this information as well on the Mountain Rifle. This is not my info, so I cant vouch for it but seems all good info. Hope this helps as well.

By pouring over old Remington catalogs I think I may have solved the mystery of your rifle.

Remington didnt offer (catalog) a stainless-steel M700 until 1992. In 1992 the very first M700 in stainless was called the Model 700 Stainless Synthetic. That rifle chambered .270 Winchester featured a blind magazine and a 24-inch barrel. Here are photos of the relevant pages in the 1992 Remington catalog.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/TimberlineX/RemingtonM700StainlessSynthetic002.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/TimberlineX/RemingtonM700StainlessSynthetic001.jpg

In 1993 that model was changed to the Remington Model 700 BDL Stainless Synthetic, and as a BDL it then featured a hinged floor plate. Also in 1993 Remington introduced what it called the Model 700 Mountain Rifle Stainless Synthetic. It featured a blind magazine and a slimmed-down mountain profile 22-inch barrel. Here are photos of the relevant pages in the 1993 Remington catalog.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/TimberlineX/RemingtonM700StainlessSynthetic003.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/TimberlineX/RemingtonM700StainlessSynthetic005.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/TimberlineX/RemingtonM700StainlessSynthetic004.jpg

Given all that, it would seem that barrel profile and length should tell us exactly which model you have. If the barrel on your rifle is 24 inches in length and of a standard sporting contour you would appear to have a 1992 Remington Model 700 Stainless Synthetic.

But if your rifle has a 22-inch barrel with a slimmed down mountain profile, you then have a 1993 Remington Model 700 Mountain Rifle Stainless Synthetic.

Measure your rifles barrel length and tell us what you have.
