Hello.
I'm the new guy.
I'm a S&W collector and IDPA competitor. My grandfather was a big 250-3000 fan. I have his pre-war 99 with a Lyman Alaskan on top.
I just adopted a very clean Savage 99 E in 308 Win SN D311XXX that I plan to use for deer hunting this fall and I have a few questions.
What was the mfg date?
Can I mount an XS lever scout mount to this gun and how? I really love that set-up with the XS Ghost Ring sights on my Marlins. Sorry, Marlin might be a dirty work around here (at least it's not Winchester).
What loads work well in this gun for whitetail deer? I'll be hunting in ME where the terrain can go from very open to very thick in a few steps. I have a lot of pistol cartridge reloading experience and a few Dillon 550Bs, but very little rifle (mainly 45/70) reloading experience.
Thanks,
Craig

Not sure of the date of manufacture, but your GrandDads, 250, what kind of forestock and buttstock does it have. What is it condition, sounds like a damn fine deer rifle. If you can reload 45/70 you can reload any rifle cartridge, just remember lube your cases, this is coming from the voice of experience, get painful if you don't lube inside the throat of the case. Gramps 250 is a damn fine deer rifle. It has taken a lot of deer. It makes the trip with me every year. It has a heavy schnabel fore end and a pistol grip/steel plate butt stock. I replaced the Lyman Alaskan with a Leupold VariX II 3X9.
I wanted my own/another 99 that would work for moose as well (if I EVER get selected in the ME lottery). The 250 is a lttle light for moose. I would have taken a 300 Savage or 308 Winchester. I found the 308 first.

It's not a takedown. Last (2) digits are "00" (D311500). It has a hard plastic butt plate w/o a Savage logo and Factory "French Skip" checkering on the pistol grip and fore grip.
I really want to put an XS scout mount on it.

What is stamped in the Barrel for Model, What is the barrel address stamp? Does it have a Monte Carlo Stock by chance? If it does, I want to say that rifle was made in 1980. Thanks. Les

Zippy...
The Savage Model 99 has excellent strength with it's massive breech block and should be a very accurate rifle (3 shots into less than one inch at 100 yards) if your bore is in good shape and you're an experienced shooter off the bench rest.
I recommend you use any reasonable .308 reloading data with a 150 grain bullet of your choice for deer. You don't need premium bullets, maximum loads and maximum muzzle velocities to kill deer.
One of my old reloading books shows an "accuracy load" for a .308 Winchester (26" barrel) with a 150 grain bullet to be 45.0 grains of IMR4895 yielding 2770 fps with a chamber pressure of 52,000 CUP. This is a "maximum" load using IMR4895, so work up to it carefully.
Another "accuracy load" in the same reloading book uses 44.0 grains of IMR3031 with a pressure of 50,000 CUP yielding 2800 fps. Maximum load = 44.5 grains @52,800 CUP yielding 2850 fps.
Sighted in 2 inches high @ 100 yards, the above loads should give you a point blank range of approximately 300 yards.
I understand Hodgdon's Varget rifle powder was developed specifically FOR the .308 Winchester cartridge. You might look into working up some loads using that powder as well.
According to the Hodgdon Basic Reloader's Manual (2003), the maximum load of Varget for the .308 Winchester using a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet in Winchester cases with Federal 210M primers is 47.0 grains (compressed load) yielding 2937 fps with a chamber pressure of 50,300 CUP. This is a MAXIMUM LOAD, approach it with caution.
Good luck... and good hunting. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks folks.
The SN was for the 308. It is stamped 99E and was made in Westfield MA. The 250 was mde in Ilion NY.
Thanks for the reload info. I have the Lyman and Hodgdon Manuals and was going to start with Varget.
Any info onthe lever mount from someone who's attempted/done it?
Thanks again,
Craig

Remington's were made in Ilion, NY, but Savages were made in Utica, NY, or Chicopee Falls and Westfield, MA.

Zippy,
Your 99E was made in the first half of 1980. (I've been on vacation or would of had you an answer earlier.) I think there was some discussion on the ghost ring sight not too long ago. Might try a "search".

I too am a new poster on here. I obtained my Uncle's 99E which is a .300.
I know some about the 99's but I can't figure out the the manufacture date for it. The barrel is stamped CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. and I know that Savage, Stevens and Fox moved their manufacturing headquarters in Jan or Feb. 1960 to Westfield.
So that is what gets me, all the vintage ads say that the E is from 1961 and manufactured in Westfield. Mine is an E, which was manufactured in CHICOPEE FALLS.
Can anyone help md

It's possible that your rifle was put together at Westfield with a barrel produced at Chicopee Falls (transition rifle).
Or... somebody rebarreled it.

this sums it up nicely.... It's possible that your rifle was put together at Westfield with a barrel produced at Chicopee Falls
When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
