Will a 7400 270 or 30-06 work correctly in a Remington 7600 270 ?
Also are the older Magazines better than the newer ones with the plastic on the bottom ?

They will all work regardless of it being for a 7400 or a 7600. In fact many guys who shoot 7400's prefer the 7600 magazine because it doesn't hold the bolt open on the last shot.

The 740/742/7400 series magazine have a bolt release in the magazine, while the 760/7600 series magazines don't have, or need, a bolt release. I think that you could use the magazines in either rifle, but the 7400 magazine would be a PITA in a 7600 because of the need to push the bolt release on the magazine at the same time you push the forearm forward. Conversely, if the 7600 magazines are used in a 7400, there won't be any bolt stop to hold the bolt open when a magazine is inserted or when the last round in the magazine has been fed, fired, and ejected.

Probably something that I'd do in a pinch, but would prefer to have the proper magazine for each particular rifle.

260, the problem with the 7400 magazine is that it holds the bolt open afte the last shot and to remove the magazine you need to first slide the release on the magazine and close the bolt, then you load a fresh magazine and cycle the action to chamer a round.

I don't have a Remington 740/742/7400, was doing it from memory of all those that I've cleaned and tryed to keep running for folks who were attached to them. The only 760s that I have are old 5-Diamond rifles, 2 in 244 and 2 in 257 Roberts.

often the newer 7400/750 mec gar mags with the plastic bottom won't work in the 742 (won't fit, wont latch, wont feed). once in a while i get lucky, however...

There have been three generations of 760 Magazines . The first was all steel with a hole in each side . The second was all steel without the hole in the side and the third is that plastic bottomed POS that Remington is using now . The Gen 2 ones are the best by far , but they are getting hard to find , and pricey , especially the 30-06 length ones . If any one out there has any Gen 2s for sale , I'm buying !!
